Georgetown University Library Strategic Initiatives 2011-2020
The Library’s strategic goals and objectives occur in the context of ongoing daily work to select, acquire and preserve scholarly resources, to make them readily accessible, and to integrate them in research, teaching and learning. Because fiscal and human resources to devote to these activities are finite we must strive to improve the efficiency of our processes for routine work. This document is based on current trends and issues influencing our work in the near and longer term future. It is necessarily iterative to respond to changes in trends and best practices that will emerge.
10 year initiatives:
Strengthen Scholarly Collections and Instructional Collaborations
The Library will continue to shape collections and services and to foster the work of Georgetown researchers at every stage of the scholarly process. The Library will work to ensure permanent accessibility of the scholarly record in all formats. Library professionals will strengthen connections and collaborations with researchers, using their subject expertise to maximize their key role at the nexus of information technologies, collections, information gathering tools, pedagogies, and researchers' needs. The Library will partner with faculty to advance and support students in their identification and effective use of information for academic success and lifelong learning.
Lead in Copyright and Scholarly Communications
The Library will be among the leaders on campus and nationally for copyright, intellectual property, and scholarly communications. The Library will expand the Georgetown community’s awareness of innovative opportunities, trends, and new models of scholarly communication. The Library will enable Georgetown scholars in asserting their intellectual property rights and expanding access to the results of their research.
Build a robust digital infrastructure
The Library will establish a robust digital infrastructure with a focus on breaking open information silos, integrating physical and digital resources, and expediting access to all the resources needed. This infrastructure will ensure discovery of and effective access to scholarly resources, support new modes of teaching and learning, and enable creativity and innovation within the University Community. Working with faculty and partners university-wide, the Library will encourage members of the University to deposit their digital intellectual output into DigitalGeorgetown. The Library will lead the university in the preservation of its historical and scholarly content in all formats; and will partner locally, nationally and globally to ensure access in perpetuity.
Enhance Library Spaces
The Library will remain a vibrant campus space, central to research, teaching, and learning, while we continue to plan for future expansion. Renovated spaces providing better access to essential collections and services will provide attractive learning environments conducive to study, collaboration, and innovation. The physical spaces will develop in concert with the evolution of the teaching and research needs of the University.
Expand Campus and Community Engagement
The Library will enhance its stature and scope of engagement through both strategic and broad based partnerships and enhanced campus presence. This heightened profile will support an array of fund raising strategies in line with the University's campaign and the Library's goals.
Recruit, develop and retain a diverse and talented staff
The Library will recruit and retain a diverse staff with the expertise, knowledge and competency to be effective in a rapidly evolving information and educational environment. The Library will promote an organizational culture of transparency, responsiveness, and assessment that will help library staff succeed. The Library will foster professional development as a means for staff to embrace our shifting environment with innovative thinking, educated forecasting, and evidence-based adaptations to digital evolution.
