United States Congress Georgetown has acquired from Neil MacNeil his collection of approximately seven thousand books and documents on the United States Congress. MacNeil, a Washington correspondent and a scholar on the history and operation of Congress, spent many years assembling this outstanding collection of material on Congress from 1787 to the present. The collection contains much rare early material on the origin, formation, and development of Congressional practices and procedures and the committee system. In the collection are hundreds of volumes on the functioning, roles, and powers of Congress, and the relationships of Congress with the Press, lobbyists, and the White House. It includes the Annals of Congress, 1789-1824, the Register of Debates, 1824-1837, and the Congressional Globe, 1833-1873. There is a considerable amount of rare and unique material not available elsewhere. With this collection the Georgetown University Library may become a major research center for students, scholars, and writers interested in the United States Congress. |
