Ambassador George C. McGhee Papers and Books

The library has received an additional substantial portion of the papers of Honorable George C. McGhee, former U.S. ambassador to Turkey and West Germany. These papers include significant material pertaining to his diplomatic career, participation in the Bilderberg Conferences, work with the Urban League, and his many other activities in public service.

Ambassador McGhee also presented to the library a portion of his extensive library of books relating to Turkey and Asia Minor. In this gift of two hundred sixty-four volumes from the 17th to early 20th centuries are early European travelers' accounts, an outstanding collection of early 19th century plate books, richly illustrated histories of costume and manners and a fine copy of the rare Treuttel and Wuertz's Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople (1819), two volumes in elephant folio with plates after Melling.
