Department of Education Grant

The Special Collections Division has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to finish the project begun some years ago (also funded by a Department of Education grant which was, unfortunately, not renewed) of creating a cumulative, computer-based index to the Division's very extensive holdings of manuscripts and other records relating to the Society of Jesus in North America. The grant, subject to continuation in federal fiscal years 1990 and 1991, will support the hiring of two professional manuscripts catalogers/indexers. Work began on the grant in October, starting with two significant collections received since the original grant was awarded: papers documenting the Jesuit mission activity in North Carolina and the archives of the Jesuit magazine America, a collection which will make up an important addition to the Division's literary holdings as well.
