Gifts in Honor of the Bicentennial--Part 2

In Newsletter 25 only a very few of the many remarkable gifts received by the library for its bicentennial were described. Following is a description of several others. A more complete and detailed account of all the bicentennial gifts can be found in the recently published catalogue, A Bicentennial Celebration.

  • Dorris, Michael A. "Georgetown University Commencement Address." Typed manuscript, 13 pages, 1989. An address by this novelist and educator to graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences from which he graduated in 1967. Gift of Michael A. Dorris.
  • Hawthorne, Nathaniel. The Complete Writings. Boston, 1900. The "Autograph Edition," in 22 volumes, signed by Hawthorne's daughter Rose Hawthorn Lathrop and by the artists commissioned to illustrate the volumes. This is set number 338 of 500. Gift of Clifford Young.
  • Hersey, John. Hiroshima . . . With A New Poem By Robert Penn Warren And Silk-Screens By Jacob Lawrence. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1983. First edition thus, number 888 of 1,500 copies signed by Hersey, Warren, and Lawrence. Gift of Rev. Royden Davis, S.J.
  • Jalal Al-Din Rumi. Masnavi. Manuscript on paper, 644 pages. A. H. 1245 (1829/30). A Persian language text containing selections from the work of this thirteenth century mystic. Gift of A. Reza Arasteh.
  • Kokuho. Tokyo, 1984. The complete set of 15 volumes and separate index volume reproducing the National Treasures of Japan, including books, paintings, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts. Gift of the Embassy of Japan.
  • Lambert, of Saint Omer. Lamberti S. Audomari canonici Liber Floridus codex autographus bibliothecae Universitatis Gandavensis auspiciis eiusdem universitatis in commemorationem diei natalis. Ghent, 1968. Number 409 of 675 copies of this magnificent facsimile of a history completed by Lambert in 1120. Gift of the Kingdom of Belgium.
  • Landor, Walter Savage. Two autograph notes, signed, to George Jacob Holyoake, 26 October 1861 and undated. The notes relate to matters that Landor, "exiled" from England by the libel prosecution, wished Holyoake to transact for him. Gift of Edith S. Mayfield.
  • La Roque, Gilles André de. Traité de la noblesse, et de toutes ses différentes espèces. Rouen, 1735. Complete edition of La Roque's many shorter treatises on French nobility, heraldry, and names first published in the late seventeenth century. Gift of Joseph John Jova.
  • Leisser, Martin B. Portrait of Zachary T. Miller, oil on canvas, Pittsburgh, ca. 1910. A portrait of the donor's maternal grandfather by the most highly reputed of Pittsburgh artists, Martin B. Leisser (1845-1940), a student of William Merritt Chase. Gift of Helen King Boyer.
  • Milton, John. Ioannis Miltoni Angli pro populo Anglicano Defensio, Contra Claudii Anonymi, alis Salmasii, Defensionem regiam. London, 1652. First edition of Milton's first contribution to the paper controversy over the execution of Charles I. Gift of Robert W. Ayers.
  • An Odd Bestiary Or, a Compendium of . . . Descriptions of Animals. Designed and illustrated by Alan James Robinson. Cheloniidae Press, 1982. Number 42 of 50 copies, with an additional suite of the illustrations ornamented with calligraphy by Elizabeth Curtis. Gift of Judith McCabe.
  • The Printer: A Monthly Newspaper, Devoted to the Interests of the "Art Preservative of All Arts." New York, 1858-61. The first three volumes of this scarce printing trade journal bound in one. Gift of Albert H. Small.
  • Quest, Charles. "Work Bench," original wood engraved block, 1949. The artist's original matrix, as used to create editions of prints, together with a copy of the finished print, second edition, number 8 of 40 copies. Gift of Charles F. Quest.
  • Rossetti, Christina. The Prince's Progress and Other Poems. London, 1866. First edition, with the ownership inscription of Gerard Manley Hopkins, together with his inscription of the name of his sister dated September 7, 1868, the date of his entry into the Society of Jesus. Gift of Rev. Timothy S. Healy, S.J.
  • Vergil, Polydore. Polydori Vergilii Urbinatis Anglicae historae libri vigintiseptem. Basil, 1570. Early edition of this standard work on early English history carried down in the present version to 1538. Gift of John Leon Lievsay.
  • Waugh, Evelyn. The Loved One An Anglo-American Tragedy. Boston, 1948. First American edition, with the author's warm inscription to Mrs. Anthony on the occasion of his visit to Georgetown University in early 1949. Gift of Grace Anthony.
  • Wordsworth, William. A Complete Guide to the Lakes, comprising Minute Directions for the Tourist. Kendal, 1842. Largely, though not entirely, written by the poet, whose writings about his native Lake District were authoritative. Gift of Paul F. Betz.
