The Library of Riley Hughes

Many alumni among our Library Associates will no doubt remember Professor Riley Hughes, for long a mainstay of Georgetown's English Department and the guiding spirit behind its summer creative writing workshop. The library's collections have recently been enhanced by more than 1550 volumes from Professor Hughes' library, the gift of his daughter, Winifred Spar, through the auspices of his widow, Josephine Hughes of Washington, D.C.

The principal strength of the collection is in modern English and American literature, although it includes a fair number of works on art, architecture, and various aspects of Catholic thought. Of special note are a number of first printings of works by modern American authors, including Ann Beattie, James Baldwin, John O'Hara, Walker Percy and many others.
