A Letter From the University Librarian

Georgetown from Key Bridge

This issue of the Associates Newsletter comes after the devastation on September 11th. We have witnessed acts of generosity and heroism and have felt the anguish of our losses.

Our work in the library has continued unabated, even as we contemplate the extraordinary changes to our world. Many of us have asked ourselves how our work can have meaning in the face of such crisis. I have answered the question for myself by remembering that Georgetown in the past has educated clergy and laity, doctors and businesswomen, even princes and presidents. I maintain the optimism that the future leaders to emerge from Georgetown will be informed in their decisions by the education they receive on our campus. I hope that this optimism inspires all our efforts.

The Library has by tradition preserved the works of the past as it acquires materials for the present and future. Today, access to the best and most timely information is critical, and the highest level of service in finding and utilizing those resources has never been more important.

The strength of the Library will depend not only on the foundations of our institution, but also on the support and goodwill of our friends. I look forward to meeting you personally in the months to come, and I welcome you to visit us at the Lauinger Library.
