Cylke Collection of Arthur Ransome

Frank Kurt Cylke has given to the library a virtually complete collection of the books and other writings of the English journalist, critic, and story-teller, Arthur Ransome (1884-1967). The collection includes more than 80 books by Ransome in a half-dozen languages; works translated by Ransome or containing contributions by him; an unpublished holograph manuscript of his translations of Caucasian folk tales; a corrected typescript of his The Soldier and Death (1920); more than a dozen autograph and typed letters; a sampling of his writing for periodicals; and a substantial collection of books and periodical articles about him.

Ransome is known principally as the author of a remarkable series of books for children; The Sunday Times of London chose his Swallows and Amazons (1930) as one of its "99 Best Books for Children." He was the author of critical works on Poe and Wilde, and wrote for the Manchester Guardian.
