Adobe Systems is a publicly traded company
that designs software that reads a printed page over the Internet without having
that page coded in hypertext markup language (HTML). The page uses a software
format called portable document format (pdf), which acts like an envelope for
the documents. The envelope can hold text pages, images, or anything that fits
on a page. The only way to open the envelope and reveal the contents is to use
the Acrobat Reader. Pdf files are sometimes identified by graphic following
the filename:
.

Using the above as your point of reference, you will learn the tools associated with viewing, moving, searching for words, and capturing text and images within the document, along with output options using Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 for Windows. If the options shown below are not available in your Reader, move your mouse to the top gray toolbar of the Reader, then click on the right side of mouse button to select. Select all options.
Many computers have Acrobat Reader software already installed.
Acrobat Reader software will open an image file when you click on a link to
a pdf file.
Note: The pdf image file is sent to your computer as
a temporary file. It will be deleted when you exit your browser.

It is possible to search for words and numbers in pdf files. Type your terms
or numbers in the "Acrobat Find" box. Check off option to "Match Whole Word
Only." It will search for parts of words or numbers if you do not mark that
option. For example, if you are looking for NAICS code 711, it will also retrieve
37112, unless you choose "Match Whole Word Only".

You can copy text and capture images to cut and paste into a word processing
program. To copy or capture, select one of the buttons, highlight the section,
and click the right mouse button to get copy command or use the copy button
(do not use the browser's cut or copy commands). Be aware that some web publishers
use a setting so documents can not to be copied, captured, or downloaded. There
are no marking or highlighting capabilities in the Acrobat Reader 5 (these features
are available in the fee-based Reader)

To copy a column of numbers into a spreadsheet program use the "Copy selected
text" option only. Once the spreadsheet program is open, paste the text
into the program (you may have to realign numbers). Do one column at a time
so each number will be in one cell.
Printing a pdf document is very easy. Every printer is different as is every Print dialog box. Because of the size of the file, some printers may not be able to print the whole document at once. You may have to divide job into smaller packets, for example a 25 page documents might have to be divided into a print job for pages 1-10, then pages 11-25.
Downloading is also an option; however one page of pdf can be as small as 20kb
or as large at 72kb per page, depending on the technique in converting it to
pdf. Unless you need to keep a copy on your computer for archival purposes,
it is more practical to copy and paste the text to a word processing program.
