Welcome to Georgetown University, the McDonough School of Business, and Lauinger Library. We have the best publicly available business collection in the Washington, D.C. MSA.
The library can help you manage time, save money, and reduce risk. To help you in
your integrative I have posted a website for where and how to search the wireless telecommunications industry at library.georgetown.edu/bic/class/wireless.htm. Your GOCard can get to most the databases from off campus.
Get to know the Business Intelligence Center or BIC. This is the portal for starting research and learning about services www.library.georgetown.edu/bic. Make it a favorite on your internet browser. It’s also available under Research Tools in the MSB intranet. When I am not around, BIC will give you access to the databases, topical research guides, and tutorials. The library provides 24/7 access.
Lauinger Library, in the heart of the university, has purchased and organized sources that make getting facts and researching scenarios seamless. While at the McDonough School of Business, your laboratory will be the world of knowledge. You should learn a few basic skills to exploit your competitive advantage by accessing the university’s information sources.
Like a good guide, it is my job to get you where you need to be. I am available by email any day, by phone much of the time, and, I am in the library at the reference desk every Monday evening. I am also in the Hariri’s Tech Center Breakout Room every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, and available by appointment with your group (202 687-7495 and boettcher@georgetown.edu).
The library provides numerous business, finance, and market research resources: if you are not finding what you need, ASK. Consider the 10-minute rule: if you can’t find what you need in 10 minutes, ask for help. I am one of seven information specialists you can call for help (202 687-9351) or use Live Help our free 24/7 help service:library.georgetown.edu/ask-us
As students of Georgetown, you can arrange a workshop on any topic or database. If your investment skills are limited to knowing one or two companies on the Dow Jones Industrial Index, then take the opportunity to request a workshop on financial sources. I can arrange workshops around your schedule, as long as you guarantee me at least four participants. Examples of workshops might be Bloomberg, Compustat’s Research Insight, and SEC filings. These workshops are also great when you are putting your business plans together for your competitions and integratives: library.georgetown.edu/bic/ea.htm.
We provide you opportunities to develop basic research skills. To learn basic and competitive intelligence skills attend an MBA Briefing. You can come to one of five scheduled times in September and November or you can arrange an alternative day and time, as long as you have four other people: September 8 (12–1 pm and 5–6 pm), September 9 (7–8 pm), and November 4 (12–1 pm and 7-8pm). Most workshops are held in the Dubin Room, Lauinger 156.
