Copyright Policies for Course Reserves

Contact Information:

Telephone 202-687-7607 Email: reserves@georgetown.edu

Policy:

1. In order to adhere to the Copyright Act of 1976, the Libraries will require that all faculty members placing photocopies or copies of other media on Reserve sign this copyright waiver statement:

I have reviewed and understand the Georgetown University publication, Copyright Issues in Higher Education : A Guide for Georgetown Faculty and the Main Campus Libraries Course Reserve Copyright Policy (this document). Consistent with these policies, I request the library make available to students in this course the requested media or reproductions cited and listed below. I have obtained all required copyright permissions. I realize that I may be responsible for any infringement of the Copyright Act of 1976 (Title 17 U.S.C.) that results from my noncompliance with the Guide and Policy.

Reserve staff, in good faith, assume the necessary copyright permission is granted or pending upon signature.

2. The Library will request copies of, and will keep on file, the copyright permission letters for any reserve requests if the materials are:

  • Photocopies of articles compiled to create, replace, or substitute for an anthology, compilation or collective work;
  • Photocopies of, or from, "consumable" works, including workbooks, exercises, standardized tests, test booklets, answer sheets, etc.;
  • Photocopies of an entire book or an entire issue of a journal.

These examples are specifically mentioned in the copyright guidelines as unlikely to be covered by fair use.

3. All Reserve photocopies will be stamped with a notice of copyright.

4. All photocopies are the property of the faculty member requesting Reserve status for the materials. Therefore all reserve materials will be removed from Reserve at the end of each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer).

5. A maximum of one copy can be placed on Reserve for every 10 - 15 students in a course.

Library of Congress Connection

Streamlined access to the Library of Congress' collections and services.

Use This Service:

Fill out the Library of Congress Connection form to:

  • initiate a research consultation with a curator at LC;
  • schedule an orientation for yourself or your class;
  • check availability of a conference room for your class to make use of materials from the LC collections.

The information you provide will be e-mailed to reference and collection development staff at both the Georgetown University Library and the Library of Congress. Librarians will review your research question and identify the reading rooms, collections and staff that can best assist you with your research.

Other Services Provided by the Library of Congress

For a comprehensive overview of resources and services available and the requirements for using the Library of Congress, visit their Research and Reference Services page.

Orientations

Researchers new to the Library are encouraged to take the Classes for First-Time Users offered by the Humanities and Social Sciences Division. These 90-minute classes, offered throughout the year, are a basic introduction for researchers using any of the Library of Congress collections and resources. Special orientations or tours can also be arranged for specific classes or groups. Use the online registration form to schedule an orientation.

Hold/Study Shelf

To facilitate serious and extended research, a limited number of individual study shelves are available in the Main Reading Room and various other reading rooms for researchers to hold charged materials for long-term use. To be assigned a shelf, complete this form and take it to the Library of Congress reading room staff.

For more information, please contact Mark Jacobs at jacobsm@georgetown.edu

Policy:

The Georgetown University–Library of Congress connection is available only to Georgetown University's faculty and students. To use the Library of Congress' public collection, you must have an LC-issued Reader Identification Card. These cards are free and can be obtained by presenting a valid driver's license, state-issued identification card or passport at the Reader Registration Station in Room LM 140, on the first floor of the Madison Building, near the Independence Avenue entrance.

Faculty Carrels

A limited number of study carrels are available to teaching faculty.

Use This Service:

Please submit a completed Faculty Carrel Application. A study carrel will be assigned when space is available. A $40.00 key deposit is required to cover the possible loss of a carrel key. In the event that your key is lost, the lock on the door will be changed and you will be required to make another deposit. Deposits are refunded when you turn in your carrel key.

Contact Information:

Access Services Department at (202) 687-7607 or accessservices@georgetown.edu.

Policy:

Only Main Campus teaching faculty may obtain a Lauinger Library faculty carrel space. Medical and Law faculty, as well as visiting researchers and scholars, are ineligible. Library carrel privileges are nontransferable. Teaching and research assistants, visiting researchers, students, colleagues, friends or family members should not use your carrel.

Due to high demand and space limitations, faculty carrels may be shared by up to three faculty members. There are three time slots for each carrel: weekday mornings, weekday afternoons and weekday evenings/weekends. You are welcome to use the carrel during another time slot provided that you leave the carrel should the assigned partner wish to use it.

Library carrels are not soundproof. Any conversation in your carrel can be heard in surrounding carrels.

Please do not use your carrel as an office. Coffee pots, hot plates, electric heaters and other equipment of this nature are prohibited.

You may keep library materials in your carrel if they are properly checked out. Any noncirculating library materials (periodicals, reference materials, newspapers, etc.) or library materials that have not been checked out, will be removed if found in your library carrel.

The library is not responsible for the loss of personal materials or library materials charged out to you. For the safety of your materials and personal possessions, the carrel door should be locked at all times.

Questions that are answered by this page:
