News and Announcements

»Afghan Book Drive

The Georgetown University Lauinger Library, Dahlgren Library, the Muslim Student Association, UNICEF, the GU Bookstore, and George Washington University are sponsoring a book drive for Afghanistan. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to donate books to help in the reconstruction of the American University in Kabul and other libraries in Afghanistan. Within the next week you will see donation boxes at the Lauinger Library, Dahlgren Library, and the GU Bookstore. If you have any questions, please contact Fatema Khimji at fnk@georgetown.edu, Greg Kitsock at 7-1887 or kitsockj@georgetown.edu, or Karl Debus-Lopez at 7-5160 or ked37@georgetown.edu. Donations of textbooks, reference materials, literature, research, and scholarly publications will be accepted through Friday, May 13th.

»New Interface for GEORGE, the online catalog

The University Libraries will soon be launching a redesigned interface to the GEORGE catalog. Improvements include a powerful advanced keyword search screen and refreshed search pages that will make searching easier. The launch is currently scheduled to take place after the end of the Spring 2005 semester.

Be one of the first to test drive our beta version, which is available at http://catalog.library.georgetown.edu:2082 or by clicking the green link at the bottom of the current GEORGE home page. We welcome your comments and questions about the new design; please forward them to Nina McHale.

Please note that even though the beta version is still in testing mode, it is a fully functional version of the catalog. Any actions that you make, such as requesting a book or renewing your checkouts, will be processed as they normally are in the current version of GEORGE.

»Introducing the New Book Paging Service

The Georgetown University Libraries are pleased to announce a new Book Paging Service. Georgetown University students, faculty, and staff can now use the “Request Item” button in GEORGE, the online catalog, to request a book with an “in library” status and have it pulled from the shelves and held at the circulation desk of their choice (Lauinger, Blommer Science, Dahlgren Medical or E.B. Williams Law Library). Requested books are usually available for pick-up within 24 hours. Please allow additional time if you are requesting that a book be delivered to another library‘s circulation desk (i.e., you want to pick up a Lauinger Library book at E.B. Williams Law Library). You will be notified by email when your book is ready for pick up.

You can also continue to use the “Request. Item” button to: request a recall on a book currently checked out to another user; request retrieval of a book from “Off Campus Storage”; or request a search for a book you cannot find on the shelf. In all instances, you can pick up the book at the library of your choice. You will be notified by email when your book is ready for pick-up.

We invite you to try this exciting new service. Any comments that you would like to share about your experiences with the paging service would be greatly appreciated. Email your comments to accessservices@georgetown.edu.

»In-Process Materials Now Available in GEORGE

Effective this month, all items recently ordered or being processed by the library can be viewed in GEORGE, the online catalog. You will now be able to see those titles that haven't reached the Library's shelves. If you identify an item that has not yet been fully cataloged, please fill out the On Order/In Process Request form. One of our staff will either contact our book vendor to expedite the order or rush catalog it for you. You will be notified by email when your item is ready for pickup.
