»Google Print and Libraries: A Scholarly Communications Event at Georgetown University

Is Google the library of tomorrow? The company mission to organize the world’s information has led Google to its latest project, Google Print, that will integrate book content into Google search results. The Google Print Library Project will digitize the content of five major library systems, including Stanford University, and make them searchable using Google Print. Users will be able to google search the content of millions of books previously only accessible in a few academic libraries around the nation. But the question remains unanswered: how will it affect scholarship throughout academia?

Thursday, May 19, 2005 from 9:30 – 11:15, in the Murray Room on the 5th Floor of Lauinger Library at Georgetown University, Michael A. Keller, Stanford University Librarian, Publisher of HighWire Press and the Stanford University Press, will be discussing Google Print, the Stanford initiative, and their impact on libraries and the academy. This is Georgetown University Libraries' Second Scholarly Communication Symposium and is sponsored by the Georgetown University Scholarly Communications Committee. All are welcome; please RSVP by Monday, May 16th to Joan Cheverie at cheverij@georgetown.edu or (202) 687-1870.

The annual Teaching, Learning, and Innovation Summer Institute (formerly Teaching, Learning, and Technology Summer Institute) will take place during the last full week of May, from Monday, May 23 until Friday, May 27, 2005. This week-long institute is now in its 11th year of existence and is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and graduate students of Georgetown University to engage in the study of innovative pedagogical practices and share their experience with their colleagues on a number of topics pertinent to the practice of teaching and learning at Georgetown.

Please visit the TLISI website for a complete list of seminars and workshop at TLISI, as well as online registration.
TLISI is a collaborative effort by the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) and its partners: the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching & Service; Dahlgren Memorial Library; the GU Writing Program; the Internet Development Group of UIS; Lauinger Library; and the Office of the Provost

»Thanks to our Students

The Library's annual Ice Cream Social to honor our student employees took place on April 14, during National Library Week. The Library, which would not function without our students, extends thanks to all of them for their myriad contributions this year.

»New Interface for GEORGE, the online catalog

The University Libraries will soon be launching a redesigned interface to the GEORGE catalog. Improvements include a powerful advanced keyword search screen and refreshed search pages that will make searching easier. The launch is currently scheduled to take place during the week of May 16th.

There's still time to test the new interface in its beta version here or by clicking the green link at the bottom of the current GEORGE home page. We welcome your comments and questions about the new design; please forward them to Nina McHale.

Please note that even though the beta version is still in testing mode, it is a fully functional version of the catalog. Any actions that you make, such as requesting a book or renewing your checkouts, will be processed as they normally are in the current version of GEORGE.

»Afghan Book Drive

A reminder that the Georgetown University Lauinger Library, Dahlgren Library, the Muslim Student Association, UNICEF, the GU Bookstore, and George Washington University are sponsoring a book drive for Afghanistan. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to donate books to help in the reconstruction of the American University in Kabul and other libraries in Afghanistan. Donation boxes are in Lauinger Library, Dahlgren Library, and the GU Bookstore. Donations of textbooks, reference materials, literature, research, and scholarly publications will be accepted through Friday, May 13th.

»A Reminder of the New Georgetown University-Library of Congress Connection

The Library of Congress, with 129 million items in 21 separate reading rooms, is one of the world's great research collections. LC welcomes public use of its general reference facilities, but it can be bewildering because of its size and complexity. The new Georgetown University-Library of Congress Connection streamlines access for Georgetown University's faculty and students to LC's collections and services as a supplement to Georgetown University Library's resources. Visit the Library's new Library of Congress Connection web page to learn how to:

  • initiate a research consultation with a curator at LC;
  • schedule an orientation for yourself or your class;
  • check availability of a conference room where a class could make use of materials from the LC collections.
