»Lauinger Exterior Work

Work has begun to repair the exterior walls of Lauinger Library. Work will take place Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and is expected to last throughout the semester. This project may be noisy at times as it will include drilling and chipping. As midterms approach, the schedule will be altered in order to minimize the impact on students who reside nearby.

»Your Course and Library Research Instruction

As you plan for your spring semester courses, remember that the librarians of the Lauinger and Blommer Science Libraries can be your partners in introducing research methods and resources to your students. Here’s how:

  • Schedule a library research instruction session with a librarian. Sessions are tailored to class assignments and can focus on particular research problems such as finding primary sources, finding statistics, and locating government documents. Librarians are prepared to discuss the research process and to introduce relevant periodical indexes, specialized databases, reference books, and Web sites. Students have hands-on practice with research materials using the computers in Dubin Classroom, first floor of Lauinger. Request online.
  • Link to Library Guides to Research by Subject, which point students in the direction of major resources in 60 topic areas. These can be linked from a course Web site or Blackboard site. We can even create a guide just for your course.
  • For more information about library research instruction, contact Sandy Hussey at 687-8689 or visit the Library Research Instruction page.

»Special Collections and a New Biography

A new biography of John F. Stevens (1853-1943) by Odin Baugh has just been published. John F. Stevens is best remembered as an American engineer who played a major role in the construction of the Panama Canal and built railroads in the American West, Canada, and Russia. The book, John Frank Stevens: American Trailblazer, uses photographs and documents from the John F. Stevens Papers, which are preserved in Special Collections at Georgetown University Library. Odin Baugh donated a copy of the book to Special Collections, where it will be cataloged, housed, and made available to researchers.

»Reminder: New Book Paging Service

Late last spring the Georgetown University Libraries introduced a new Book Paging Service. Georgetown University students, faculty, and staff can now use the “Request Item” button in GEORGE, the online catalog, to request a book with an “in library” status and have it pulled from the shelves and held at the circulation desk of their choice (Lauinger, Blommer Science, Dahlgren Medical or E.B. Williams Law Library). Requested books are usually available for pick-up within 24 hours. Please allow additional time if you are requesting that a book be delivered to another library‘s circulation desk (i.e., you want to pick up a Lauinger Library book at E.B. Williams Law Library). You will be notified by email when your book is ready for pick up.

You can also continue to use the “Request Item” button to: request a recall on a book currently checked out to another user; request retrieval of a book from “Off Campus Storage”; or request a search for a book you cannot find on the shelf. In all instances, you can pick up the book at the library of your choice. You will be notified by email when your book is ready for pick-up.

Any comments that you would like to share about your experiences with the paging service would be greatly appreciated. Email your comments to accessservices@georgetown.edu.
