»Lauinger Library Wireless Network Improvements

Much has changed since the University installed the wireless network throughout Lauinger Library in Fall 2002. The convenience and mobility provided by the wireless network has become essential. Notebook computers with wireless capability are now common, use of the wireless network continues to increase, and the existing network can no longer keep up with demand.

University Information Services and the Library are working together to install a new wireless network that should dramatically improve performance. Using the latest standards, the new network will be much faster and will have far more access points distributed throughout the building. Installation of the new wireless network began on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 and is expected to be complete and operational by the beginning of Spring semester classes. To minimize disruption, signs will indicate on which floor work is being done each day.

Go to http://uis.georgetown.edu/connecting/airhoyawireless/index.html for detailed instructions on using the wireless network.

»IEEE Xplore--A Major New Resource

The Library now subscribes to IEEE Xplore, also known as IEL, which provides full text access to high quality technical literature in computer science, electronics, and electrical engineering. Purchased primarily in support of the new Master’s Degree in Computer Science, the IEL provides content of interest to many others in the University. Students and faculty seeking information about game theory, innovation, technical developments in communications, environmental issues relating to electrical power, and many, many other topics will find highly relevant documents in IEEE Xplore. The Library is pleased to provide this valuable resource in response to requests from students and faculty in Computer Science, Business, and STIA (Science, Technology & International Affairs).

IEL is the digital library of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (formerly IEE, the Institution of Electrical Engineers). The IEL contains the full text of IEEE and IET journals, transactions, and conference proceedings from 1988 to the present, with some content back to 1913. It also includes all IEEE standards from 1948 to the present. The IEL contains over 1.6 million documents. Approximately 2,500 new documents are added each week.
