»Bronze Bust of Archbishop John Carroll

The President's Office recently alerted the Library to the auction sale in Ireland of an important bronze bust of Archbishop John Carroll by the noted Irish sculptor Jerome Connor (1874-1943). Research by preservation librarian Karen O'Connell and art curator LuLen Walker enabled a last-minute successful live phone bid to acquire the work for the University Art Collection.

The bust was cast from the original plaster study Connor had used for the monumental seated Carroll statue here in Healy Circle, commissioned in 1910. After returning to Ireland in 1925, Connor made small bronze castings of several of his plaster models, which he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, Ireland. One of these, the John Carroll bust, was purchased in the 1930s or 40s by the parents of the current owner, who consigned the bust at auction. The bust will go on view in Carroll Parlor in the Healy building when it arrives from Ireland.

»Organizational Changes at Lauinger Library

Some organizational changes in Lauinger Library will be implemented beginning June 1, 2007, in order to provide improved access to collections and to align our priorities with the changing needs of the University.

  • Beginning in Fall 2007, the Government Documents and Microforms area will become an open collection, with 24 hour access. Circulating government materials can be checked out from the Circulation Desk on the third floor, as with other circulating Lauinger collections. The Government Documents Reference Librarian will provide information and research assistance from the Reference Desk on the third floor. You will continue to reach our subject specialist for government publications at 202-687-7467 or govdocs@georgetown.edu.
  • Our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist will relocate to the Gelardin New Media Center, directly across from Government Documents on the first floor. We will continue to provide class instruction, training, and assistance for GIS and for government documents and microforms. For information about GIS, you may contact the Gelardin New Media Center at 202-687-7410.
  • The microform reader/printers will also be moved to the Gelardin New Media Center, and staff there will be able to offer assistance to users.
  • On June 1, the walk-up printing service in Copy Services, on the second floor, will close, but the Library will continue to provide and maintain public copiers and printers throughout the building.

Please contact us at reference@georgetown.edu if you have any comments or if we can answer any questions you may have.

»Georgetown's Public Library

The Georgetown University Library has offered support to the DC Public Library Georgetown Branch, which recently suffered a devastating fire. Help offered included possible housing for story hour and summer reading programs, a temporary "residency" for the Archivist, and increased access to Lauinger Library through the summer for Georgetown residents. As more is known about our neighbor library's specific needs, we will let you know how we are able to assist them and how those in the University community who wish to may be able to help as well.
