Using Media in the Classroom

Faculty and students may use either their own media (videocassettes, DVD's, audio CDs, etc.) or media from the Gelardin New Media Center (GNMC) of Lauinger Library. In addition, CETS can assist in the purchase or rental of media for instruction in scheduled Main Campus classes.

Using Media from the Gelardin New Media Center

If you want to use media from the Gelardin New Media Center catalog for a class, you can specify that in the Classroom Services service request form for Main Campus requests. For events in the ICC Auditorium and Galleria you can specify media titles in the service request form for those events. When specified in these service requests the media will be delivered with the class or event set-up.

If you can not provide two business days notice, CETS asks that you pick up the media from the GNMC, located on the first floor of Lauinger Library. Patrons will need to sign-out media under their own bar-codes, and will be responsible for ensuring its safe return to Lauinger Library.

Using your own Media

CETS encourages that you bring your own media titles into the classroom. The formats that we support are VHS; CD; DVD; 16mm films; and 35mm slides. We do recommend that you bring your media to our main office in ICC 121 prior to the event to test for compatibility with our systems.

Note: It is especially important to test home-produced DVDs and CDs with CETS equipment prior to your class or event. Some consumer-grade DVD or audio CD players cannot read all formats of computer-created audio CDs or DVDs.

Media Production

The GNMC has facilities for audio-visual editing and production and can assist you in those areas.

Purchasing Media

In partnership with the Gelardin New Media Center CETS offers a means of purchasing media for educational use. Any acquisition will be placed into the university's media collection in the GNMC. Faculty may request that media such as VHS; CD; DVD; 16mm films; and 35mm slides be purchased. Please allow ample time to review, purchase and catalog media. Depending on availability, a specific title can take up to six weeks to be ordered and received.
