New Printers
The library Systems Department has installed new printers in the Gelardin New Media Center. The new printers have more memory, and should speed the printing process for larger documents.

Scanning
What Can Be Done? — Scan Text, Images, Photographs & Slides
- Scan and edit text from printed materials and images from slides and photographs
- Eliminate retyping by scanning print documents and converting them into Word documents
- Create PDF files from files or hard copy
- Add scanned images to webpages (also see our Web Development resources page)
How to Get Started? — Training
- Refer to the media resource guides, available in the Gelardin Main Room and online
- Consult a multimedia specialist in the Center at 202-687-7410 to arrange for an instructional session and project consultation
Where Can it Be Done? — Facilities
- Scanning can be performed in the Picchi Multimedia Room
- To have slides produced from scanned photographs or to have photographs made from slides contact Production Services
Don't want to do it yourself?
- Due to the individual nature of each project and the varying degrees of complexity, a direct consultation is required to estimate the cost of a scanning project. Graphic design services are available a the cost of $60 per hour plus the cost of materials.
- Quick Image Scanning (72 dpi for Internet, Web, or PowerPoint) - $3 per image
- Customized Image Scanning (high resolution for publication or photo-printing, includes staff touch up) - $7 per image.

- OCR - $2.50 each page
- OCR Autofeed - $1.50 for 1st page, $0.50 each additional
- PDF - $1.50 each page
- PDF Autofeed - $1.50 for 1st page, $0.50 each additional

What Programs and Machines are Used? — Equipment and Software
Hardware
- Canon Canoscan 8600F Flatbed Scanner — Scan photographs, slides, film, text and images (Strip film, slide, and negative adapters must be checked out from the Gelardin service desk)
- Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 5550c Flatbed Scanner — Scan photographs, text and images
- Nikon CoolScan IV ED Slide Scanner — Scan and edit individual slides, negatives, and save them digitally. Crop and/or edit the image using Adobe Photoshop (Strip film adapter must be checked out from the Gelardin service desk)
Software
- Adobe Acrobat — Create PDFs scanned from print for use in email, Excel, PowerPoint, or Word
- Adobe Photoshop — Edit and create images, producing professional-quality output
- Adobe Reader — View, print, search, and share PDF files
- OmniPage Professional — Eliminate retyping. Quickly turn paper and PDF files into editable electronic documents that look just like the original, complete with text, tables and graphics
