Guide to Research: Crime and Criminal Justice Data

This guide provides a list of publications and websites which are useful for locating crime data, including both general statistics and specialized categories of crime information. The majority of these criminal justice resources are issued by U.S. Government agencies, but there are also several links to websites of organizations and individuals. This "Statistical Abstract Supplement" provides data on crime rate, violent crime, etc. for states, counties and for cities with populations of 25,000 or more. It is issued every five years.

Provided in this CD-ROM set are statistics on crimes reported by local law enforcement agencies to the FBI. Some of the categories included are homicide, robbery, motor vehicle theft and arson.

Data on all aspects of crime is gathered from approximately 100 public and private sources to produce this annual volume. The tables include statistics covering types of offenses, judicial processing and the corrections population.

Summary data on 1999 corrections statistics are provided here, along with links to other datasets and publications that offer information on such areas as the incarceration rate, inmates and facilities.

MAPS (formerly known as the Crime Mapping Research Center), established in 1997, provides federal leadership for the use of GIS technology for crime issues. This website provides mapping tools which can be downloaded, as well as links to other software and publications.

Data on suspects and defendants processed in the Federal system can be queried and downloaded at this website, co-sponsored by the Urban Institute.
