Geographic
Information Systems (GIS)
ArcView Site License Program
Fact Sheet
What is ArcView?
The ArcView Geographic Information System (GIS) is
a powerful desktop mapping software program for
managing information and data of any kind based
on location. This decision-making tool allows users
to visualize
information and data in new ways that reveal
relationships, patterns, and trends. The software enables
users to
analyze data and to create customized maps
based on that analysis. Users can supply their own data,
make use
of data sets available in the Government Documents
and Microforms Department, or utilize data that accompany
the ArcView software.
What is the ArcView Site License Program?
Previously, the ArcView GIS software was available for use only
in the Government Documents and Microforms Department of Lauinger
Library. With the site license program, we are now authorized
to offer Georgetown University faculty, students, and staff the
opportunity to load a copy of the ArcView software onto any University-owned
computer for use in teaching, research, or course work.
Note: The ArcView software must be removed
from the computer(s) at the end of the semester.
How does the program work?
- Interested Georgetown University faculty, students,
and staff should first complete the ArcView
Site License Registration Form .
- Once status has been verified, users can then
borrow a copy of the ArcView Site License Kit from
the
Government Documents and Microforms Department.
- Participants load the software onto any University-owned
computer and then return the kit to the
Government Documents and Microforms Department.
- The circulation period for the ArcView Site License
Kit is two weeks.
Training
- An easy way to begin learning ArcView is to complete
the "Quick Start Tutorial" that appears
in the
manual, Using ArcView GIS. A copy of this manual is included in each Site
License Kit.
- In addition, we highly recommend completing the
exercises that appear in Part II of Getting
to Know ArcView GIS: The Geographic System for Everyone. This book is available
for
consultation in the
Government Documents and Microforms Department (Gov Doc Ref G 70.2 .G48
1997).
- Several Government Documents and Microforms
Department
staff members can offer
introductory
ArcView training and provide assistance using a wide range of electronic
data in the Government
Documents and Microforms Department.
- Information about fee-based classes offered
by ArcView's producer, Environmental Systems Research
Institute, Inc. (ESRI), can be obtained from the ESRI web site.
Technical Support
Please note that the ArcView site license requires
that any technical support requests made to ESRI must
be
channeled through Joan Cheverie in the Government
Documents and Microforms Department. Users that contact
ESRI directly will be referred back to Joan.
Recommended Hardware and Software
ArcView requires the following minimum configuration
for optimal performance:
- Pentium multimedia PC
- Windows 95 or Windows NT
- 32 MB of RAM
- 18 MB hard disk space
- 256-color display adapter
Further hardware and software details appear in the
