Title page of the first volume of 5 (Paris: 1781-1786] of these Picturesque Voyages to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which altogether contain 284 engraved plates, as well as a number of other vignettes , headpieces, cul-de-lamps, maps and plates of medals. A monumental undertaking, which surpasses most of the works publishes in France during and after the time of the Grand Tour, for this work de Saint-Non availed himself of the contribution of some of the major engravers and artists of the time, including Fragonard and Hubert Robert who traveled to Naples and contributed drawings for this work. It was with this work that for the first time the primary role in the genre of travel books there is a most an almost complete shift to landscape depiction, thus ushering in new “aesthetics of the picturesque”. The title page shows an allegorical vignette of the Kingdom of Naples.

Frontespizio, contenente una vignetta allegorica del Regno di Napoli, del primo volume (di 5) della monumentale opera illustrata dei Viaggi pittoreschi realizzati a Parigi dall’Abate de Saint-Non tra il 1781 e il 1786. Oltre alle 284 tavole a cui lavorarono i piú valenti artisti dell’epoca, I volumi sono arricchiti da una profusione di altre incisioni, vignette, fregi a capopagina, finalini, carte geografiche, e tavole raffiguranti monete antiche. Tra gli artisti che si recarono appositamente nel Regno delle due Sicilie per ritrarre dal vivo scene e paesaggi basti ricordare gli allora già famosi Fragonard e Hubert Robert. L’opera riveste particolare importanza nella storia del genere dei libri di viaggio soprattutto perchè per la prima volta l’attenzione quasi esclusiva del viaggiatore viene rivolta al paesaggio, contribuendo quindi a creare una nuova concezione estetica del “pittoresco”.
