MICHAEL DE LA BEDOYERE PAPERS

The Michael de la Bedoyere papers primarily contain correspondence received from editors and colleagues of the Catholic Herald, as well as from other Catholic journals. Of interest is the correspondence exchanged between Count de la Bedoyere and the Catholic Herald concerning his resignation. Included is correspondence from several of the publishers of books by Count de la Bedoyere.

Count Michael de la Bedoyere was born in England, May 16, 1900. He was the son of Comte Yvon de la Bedoyere and Sybil Emily, the daughter of Dr. Anthony W. Thorold, sometime Bishop of Winchester.

Count de la Bedoyere was educated at Stonyhurst College, and Oxford University where he received his M.A. From 1928 to 1929, he was assistant master at Beaumont College; then in 1930 he taught for a year in the U.S. at the University of Minnesota as lecturer in philosophy. From 1932 to 1934, Count de la Bedoyere was assistant editor of the Dublin Review; the following year he was editor for the Catholic Herald; and from 1962 until 1968 he edited Search Newsletter.

Count de la Bedoyere published many books:

Count de la Bedoyere married his first wife Catherine in 1930. She was the daughter of writer and journalist Algar Labouchere Thorold (1866-1936), son of Dr. Anthony W. Thorold. They had four sons (including Stephen de la Bedoyere, whose correspondence to his father is available in this collection) and a daughter. After Catherine's death in 1959, Count de la Bedoyere remarried in 1961, Charlotte Halbik. They had two sons.

Count de la Bedoyere resided in Edenbridge, Kent, until his death on July 13, 1973.
