Pise, born ca. 1802, joined the Society of Jesus, was sent to Rome in 1820 as a Scholastic, but left the Society and returned to the U.S. Ordained in 1825, received M.A. at Georgetown in 1830, taught, served parishes, and in 1832 became Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. Always remained on good terms with Jesuits (it is implied he left the Society only because he needed to support his mother and sister). The Catons and Lewis Cass appear in his papers -- and apparently went to Europe several times.
