THE WILLIAM M. KING, SJ, PAPERS

The William M. King, SJ, Papers are a collection of notes taken by Rev. King while he was a seminarian. The papers are divided into two series. The first series is comprised of the notes taken by Rev. King while he was a student at Woodstock Theological College. The notes are from a theology course taught by John Courtney Murray, SJ, in the fall of 1959 on the trinity. This was the first course taught by Rev. Murray since he was silenced by his Jesuit superiors in Rome for his controversial writings on church-state relations in 1954. Also included in this series are the notes taken by King for a scholarly paper given by John Courtney Murray on the relationship between Church and State at the Conference of Theologians in 1958.

The second series in this collection is comprised of the retreat notes recorded by Rev. King while performing the Spiritual Exercises under the direction of Rev. John McEvoy, SJ, at the Novitiate of Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, in the fall of 1948.

Born on April 4, 1928, William Martin King entered Georgetown University in 1946 as a freshman, but left the institution before graduating to enter the Jesuit seminary in 1948. He was ordained a priest in 1960 and took his final vows as a Jesuit in 1965. He earned his doctorate in history concurrently while studying for the priesthood. He taught on the faculty at Loyola College in Baltimore after his ordination, and was later transferred to St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he remained for over twenty years. He is currently assigned to a parish in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
