REV. JOHN EARLY, SJ PAPERS

Rev. John Early, SJ was born in Ireland in 1814. At the age of 19, he came to the United States, where he attended Mt. St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In February of 1834, he became a student at Georgetown College, where he studied philosophy. It was in this same year that he joined the Society of Jesus. Fr. Early's association with Georgetown was to be an enduring one: not only did he go on to teach rhetoric there, but he also served two terms as Georgetown's President(1858-66 and 1870-73). Fr. Early's academic career was not limited to service at Georgetown, however. He founded Loyola College in Baltimore when sent to that city in 1852, and served as its Rector for 6 years. Before going to Baltimore, he served as Rector of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. On May 23, 1873, while serving his second term as President of Georgetown,Fr. Early died.
