DAVID MITCHELL PAPERS

The David Mitchell Papers consist of research files generated by writerDavid Mitchell for his 1980 book "The Jesuits: A History." There are notes on Mitchell's interviews with Jesuit and non-Jesuit sources, notes on published secondary sources, and a fine set of photographs. The Mitchell Papers are of use to scholars studying the history of the Jesuits. The collection is contained in two archival boxes (3.0 linear feet).

Jesuit history is one of the principal collecting areas of the Georgetown University Library Special Collections Division, which curates many Jesuit related collections. To name but a few, the papers of John Courtney Murray, S.J., Horace B. McKenna, S.J., and Gustave Weigel, S.J. are preserved in Special Collections. In addition, a several collections contain Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. documents.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - David Mitchell was born in Britain in South Kensington on January 24, 1924. He was educated at Westminster School and Bradfield College. During World War II, he was briefly a member of the RAF. He then read modern history at Trinity College, Oxford.

From 1947-1952, Mitchell worked as a journalist with the magazine "Picture Post." Next, he served as owner-editor of a photojournalistic agency on Fleet Street. Then, from 1958-1965, he was a picture editor in the Central Office of Information. In 1965, Mitchell embarked on a career as a freelance writer.

Mitchell has published numerous books, including "Women on the Warpath: the Story of the Women of the First World War" (1966), "The Fighting Pankhursts" (1967), "1919 Red Mirage" (1970), "Pirates: An Illustrated History" (1976), "Queen Christabel: A Biography of Christabel Pankhurst" (1977), "The Jesuits: A History" (1980), "The Spanish Civil War" (1982), and "Here in Spain" (1988).
