REV. ROBERT A. PARSONS, SJ PAPERS

Most of the material is that of a Catholic Military Chaplain (1st Lt.)during 1944 at a large Army post and hospital in Florida . Besides routinely saying Mass, most of the work appears to have involved marriage arrangements and baptisms pertaining thereto, and this plus pertinent correspondence comprises the bulk of the collection. There is some material on the provision of religious services to the German P.O.W. camp immediately adjacent. Finally, there are two folders of church marriage registers from 18th century Maryland and Philadelphia, perhaps a family genealogical interest.

SERIES: 1. Parsons: Catholic Military Chaplain, 1943-1946

SERIES DESCRIPTION: This includes office files and routine correspondence as well asbaptismal and marriage forms on soldiers and their intended brides. Becausethere was a large hospital as part of Camp Blanding, Florida, where most ofthis originated, there was a large female component and more marriages thanon regular posts. There is substantial correspondence with the MilitaryOrdinariate in New York, the Diocese of St. Augustine, and parish prieststhroughout the country. There is a series of monthly reports from thechaplain's office, both to higher military headquarters and to the MilitaryOrdinariate, a Catholic entity in New York under Cardinal Spellman'scontrol. There is limited material on the welfare of the troops, and onefolder on the provision of religious services to the German CatholicP.O.W.s whose compound was adjacent to Camp Blanding.

SERIES DESCRIPTION: Two folders of typescripts. The first is copied from the records ofFathers Mosley and Bolton, covers about 1763 - 1802 in Maryland (EasternShore included) and Delaware. The second is a copy of a marriage registerfrom St. Joseph's Church, Philadelphia.
