The Department of Defense Film Collection (Part 2) contains records of the film industry's dealings with the Pictorial Branch of the Department of Defense during the period 1966 to 1999. This collection includes the actual typed scripts for both motion pictures and TV films, including episodes for TV series. Correspondence and publicity materials for certain films are included as well.
This collection is significant for the insight it provides concerning the relationship between the military and the film industry. The Department of Defense's response to the film industry's requests for its approval of, and cooperation with, these scripts is of particular interest. The Department's commentaries range from outright objection to the film's portrayal of the military to detailed corrections on protocol issues. The scripts themselves afford an opportunity to study Hollywood's handling of military themes over a period of thirty years.
