Ryan was born in Ireland in 1843, came to the U.S. as a child, and entered the Society in 1857. Receiving the usual education offered in the province, he was ordained in 1873. He taught at Georgetown, Boston, and Holy Cross, MA. During the ten years from 1880-1890 he was not teaching,but the rest of his active life he passed in college teaching at St.Joseph's Philadelphia, Gonzaga Washington, Georgetown, and Loyola. He died in 1913.
Ryan wrote actively, and had a number of historical contributions in the Woodstock Letters. His Papers include correspondence he received, some poems and short pieces, and the MSS of two novellas.
