REV. STEPHEN X. WINTERS, S.J. PAPERS

The Rev. Stephen X. Winters, S.J. was born on November 3, 1907 in Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. After graduation from St. Francis Xavier High School in New York City, he entered the Society of Jesus on September 7, 1924, at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in Poughkeepsie, New York. Fr.Winter's education continued, with the years 1928 - 1931 spent studying philosophy at Heythrop College in England, after which he obtained both a bachelor's and a master's degree in theology at Woodstock College in Woodstock, Maryland, where he was ordained on June 20, 1937. Before Fr.Winters took up his theology studies at Woodstock in 1934, he taught the classics at Loyola College, Baltimore, and Fordham University in the Bronx,New York.

After having studied Ascetical Theology at the Jesuit Seminary in Auriesville, New York, Fr. Winters returned to Fordham once again to teach classics, and by 1940 he had become associate director of the University press there. From 1941 - 1945, he was an associate editor of the Messenger of the Sacred Heart magazine. Fr. Winters' last assignment in New York was as assistant administrator of the Jesuit Sanitarium in Monroe.

In 1950, Fr. Winters came from New York to Georgetown University ,where he became assistant director of the observatory and of the University's radio program "Georgetown University Forum." From 1956 - 1968he was administrative assistant to the President of the University, after which he became a writer and librarian for the Jesuit Community at Georgetown. While at Georgetown, Fr. Winters frequently provided the Latin and English texts for the citations accompanying the University's honorary degrees and awards.

Fr. Winters died in Georgetown University Hospital of a heart ailment on December 9, 1970.

The Rev. Stephen X. Winters, S.J. Papers Collection comprises a miscellany of items contained in the Rev. Stephen X. Winters Estate. The manuscripts are for the most part juvenilia and student notes in Rhetoric and Greek, while the majority of the collection is made up of various family photographs, and varia found in the Estate. Also included are a number of clippings of Fr. Winters' articles from his tenure as associate editor of the Messenger of the Sacred Heart.
