THE ENDO-OWEN COLLECTION

SCOPE:

The Endo-Owen Collection consists of letters and manuscripts related to the English translation of two works by the Japanese Catholic author Shusaku Endo --The Samurai and Stained Glass Elegies, and their publication in Great Britain by Peter Owen Limited.

The First Series, covering the novel The Samurai, contains extensive correspondence between the translator Van Gessel and his editor Dan Franklin, as well as a few letters to and from publisher Peter Owen, and one carbon of a letter to Endo. Most of the letters contain lists of possible changes in the translation, as well as discussions of the difficulties of translation in general, and mentions of specific problems of expression.

The Second Series comprises materials on the short-story collection Stained Glass Elegies. Two letters from Gessel to Antonia Owen exhaust the correspondence included on this second venture, but multiple typescript copies from each stage of preparation, from the first drafts of the translations to the printer's proofs, complete the collection.

Additional material, including correspondence from Shusaku Endo to Peter Owen, was added in 1986.

Shusaku Endo was born in Tokyo in 1923 and converted to Catholicism with his family while still a child. Much of Endo's work arises from this conversion, and his subsequent struggle to develop faith in a personal deity alien to Japanese culture.

As a student during the Second World War, he experience the shortages and bombings, and much of his writing explores the pressures that suffering can impose on human relationships and on the human psyche.

After the war, Endo studied in France, but returned home after three years on account of illness. After his return and convalescence, Endo decided on his career as a writer, publishing his first novel Shiroihito in 1955.

Throughout his career, Shusaku Endo has won high honors for his writing, including the most prestigious award available for a Japanese artist, election to the Japan Arts Academy (Nihon Geijutsuin).
