The book seems to have pleased nearly all the people whose opinion I value, & I have (rather to my surprise) had a number of appreciative letters from "Shakespearian experts." But it doesn't sell much, which is annoying, as I particularly want to have a 2d edition because there are a few things I want to add or change..."

ALS 12/4/1939, 2pp/1 sheet: "Dear Shane, The debased version of my rhyme about the rabbit which you send me is an example of the way in which one's works are corrupted by unscrupulous & indelicate (I use the word in the French sense "indelicate") imitators. Belloc shamelessly stole the idea of my rhyme about animals..." Includes reference to a book about Oscar Wilde by Lord Alfred Douglas: "Oscar Wilde, the Last Word."

Includes special references to Irish independence and related politics, as well as to a dinner that included the Irish American Judge Daniel Florence Cohalan, of which Sir Shane wrote: "...I found his position with regard to Ireland was far from unreasonable. He told me frankly that he had no enmity of ill will to England provided she left Ireland alone. Shortly after he rose and spoke on Ireland as an international question. His speech was not radical nor conservative either...What he said was, as he said himself, as much for England's good as for Ireland's. His theme was that England must be helped to do justice to Ireland, not necessarily forced. At the same time he laid the greatest stress possible on the self-determination of Ireland..."
