Also included in the folder are items from other papers concerning the history of Madison County as well as the French Broad River.

DESCRIPTION: This folder contains correspondence from the year 1966. Among items of interest is a letter (May l5, 1966) from John J. Krol, Archbishop of Philadelphia concerning revisions in the marriage rite pertaining to mixed marriages where non-catholic clergy are present. Attached to another letter from the Archbishop is a sermon suggested for Extension Sunday. Other items consist of letters to and from superiors or other priests, much of which regards general business or parish matters.

This item was a composite of a survey of nuns concerning their impressions, likes and dislikes regarding retreats conducted by Jesuit retreat masters.

DESCRIPTION: The reading material of Andrew Graves, S.J., comprises this folder. Included are the following: Merlin R. Carothers' book "Power in Praise," one copy of the periodicals "The Jesuit Seminary News" (Jan. 1945), "The State" (July, 1959), and a photostatic copy fragment from an unidentified [presumably] Catholic journal. "The State," a North Carolina publication, contains articles concerning the history of Warm Springs (Hot Springs) in 1881 and Madison County.

DESCRIPTION: Contained within the folder is a handwritten oral history interview with Gilbert Stackhouse concerning the history of the Stackhouse Family of Stackhouse [Madison County], N.C. conducted on August 14, 1975. The material is in a question-answer format. Several of the questions have blanks in the space provided for the answers. Material does contain some interesting historical insights, particularly with regard to the social status of southern Negroes prior to integration.

Waters, Bishop of Raleigh, announcing Pope Paul VI's establishment of the Diocese of Charlotte, to be derived from part of the Diocese of Raleigh. It also announces the appointment of Monsignor Michael J. Begley, Pastor of Our Lady of Grace Parish [Greensboro, North Carolina], as the diocese's first bishop.

Of particular interest is one such newsletter (Oct. 15, 1941) describing his living conditions and first encounters with the area. There is also correspondence regarding the establishment of Negro missions. Another letter (Sept. 2, 1937) describes personal difficulties encountered upon arrival into Revere, N.C., as well as a description of the extent of Catholicism in the area.

Of particular interest is a letter (Sept. 25, 1973) from Michael Begley, Bishop of Charlotte, concerning the results of a meeting of the Senate of Priests from the Diocese of Charlotte. Included in this letter is information regarding the upgrade of priests' salaries and directives on financial matters such as insurance, expenses, etc. There is also a letter (Nov. 19, 1973) from the Provincial's residence concerning the establishment of province Task Forces to address some of the major questions facing the Society of Jesus.
