DESCRIPTION: Copy of "Foundation Stones of Madison County" by Sadie Smathers Patton, January 1, 1951. Also, rough notes from census, 1860-1870; notes concerning history of the county, 1934-1937; notes on redevelopment area organization of Madison County, 1961 - provides a rough "State of the County" at that time. There is also David C. Cunningham's "A History of Hot Springs" which covers the period from its foundation up to 1952-bibliography included.

DESCRIPTION: Provides notes concerning the history of Madison County, North Carolina and surrounding areas dating from the discovery of Hot Springs (1778) and the popularity of the baths (1779) to the events of the year 1927. Folder also provides a photostatic copy of a printed article dealing with the early history and settlement of North Carolina. Included also are some brief statistics concerning Negro slavery in Madison County (1860).

DESCRIPTION: Provides a history of Madison County, North Carolina and notes concerning the town of Hot Springs as well as photostatic copies of printed historical sketches of Avery, Buncombe, and Yancey Counties. Included also is a typescript history entitled "The French Broad Route and The Life of the South." In addition, there is a photostatic copy of a printed article concerning Zebulon B. Vance, Governor of North Carolina during the Civil War.

DESCRIPTION: This folder contains an Agricultural-Industrial Survey of Madison County, North Carolina (1934) conducted by the Civil Works Administration and edited by the Tennessee Valley Authority (1935). The survey contains a historical sketch of Madison County and surrounding areas and provides a rather detailed description of statistical data treating such topics as demography, topography, and agriculture. Included also is a typescript of unknown origins concerning the cleaning up of the French Broad River.

DESCRIPTION: The material in this folder concerns the Diocese of Raleigh during the period of 1926-1968/9. It contains statistics regarding the growth of Catholicism within the diocese (1868-1968).

DESCRIPTION: This folder consists of a copy of the Status Animarum Report sent to diocesean office in Raleigh for the period 1953-1970 for Chapel of the Redeemer Mission and St. Theresa Parish in Hot Springs, N.C. Included are statistics concerning baptisms, marriages, confirmations, converts and Catholics in the school system (both public and parochial schools). There is also an attached letter and addendum to the report which also provides statistics for Catholics in Revere, N.C. A section of the addendum addresses Negro Catholics in the area as well. Non-dated [notes] statistics for Catholicism in the county is also included.

DESCRIPTION: Contained are two basic items in this folder. The first is a demographical table concerning the religious denominations by county between 1900-1906. The other item is a legal pad containing historical/demographical notes concerning Catholicism in North Carolina from as early as 1800. Material has references to the Diocese of Charleston (South Carolina) in much of the l9th Century data. [It included North Carolina within its jurisdiction until 1868].

DESCRIPTION: The History of the Jesuits in North Carolina from 1926-1935 is the subject matter with which this folder deals. There is also a typescript authored by Father A. Graves, S.J. which addresses specifically the settlement of the Jesuits in Madison County. There is also a manuscript and typescript copy of a section of "Jesuits in Our Southland (1566-1946)" by Michael Kenny, S.J., concerning Edward Cummings, S.J., provincial in 1924, and his successor John M. Salter, S.J. There are also two typescripts which pertain to the Jesuit Tertianship in North Carolina (1926-1927).

DESCRIPTION: Within this folder is material concerning history of the Catholic Church in Madison County, North Carolina essentially from 1904-1966. The material also includes background data extending as far back as 1848 which deals not only with Catholicism in the general Madison County area, but also neighboring southern states during the 19th Century. The folder consists of two typescripts, a fragment of third typescript and a manuscript. The manuscript additionally mentions the entrance of Jesuits into the area (1926).

DESCRIPTION: This folder includes notes and typescript items which pertain to the history of Catholicism in North Carolina and in Madison County in particular. Among items of interest is an article by Father Andrew Graves, S.J. which appeared in the Bicentennial Edition of "The [Marshall, N.C.] News-Record" (July, 1976) entitled "Catholics First Looked to South Carolina for Priest."

DESCRIPTION: Folder contains oral history as dictated to Bob Gessner of Raleigh, N.C. Sept. 5, 1977 by Father Andrew Graves, S.J., entitled: "My Forty Years as a Missionary Priest in Madison County, North Carolina," covering the period from 1937-1977. This oral history is comprised of both typescript and manuscript. The manuscript oral history is styled somewhat along the lines of his diary entries (i.e., more in the style of notes than a narrative). Interspersed are also copies of correspondance to and from various individuals.

DESCRIPTION: Folder contains computer printout of statistical table providing a breakdown of personal income by type of payment and show of earnings by broad industrial sector for the years 1929-1969. Included also are a set of tables showing the total and per capita income for the State of North Carolina.

DESCRIPTION: Folder contains two reports and a set of meeting minutes. Items include: report on meeting of the Catholic Workers in Appalachia (1969), minutes of the Catholic Committee of Appalachia (1970), and the final report of the Council of the Southern Mountains, Inc., concerning the Appalachian Project to the Ford Foundation (July 22, 1967). This 132 page report consists of four sections: Background, the Program, Twenty Projects and the Condensed Financial Statement of receipts and expenditures from Nov., 1963 to Jun., 1967. This report is a summary of the project grant in the related areas of education, continuing research and publications applied for by the Council to the Ford Foundation in June, 1963.

DESCRIPTION: Included in this folder are informational materials essentially concerning the mineral springs at Hot Springs, N.C. There is a concise history of Hot Springs as well as materials pertaining to mineral waters in different parts of the United States, including a copy of three journal articles: 1) "Radioactivity of the Spring Waters of Hot Springs National Park and Vicinity in Arkansas" (Feb. 1954); 2) "On the Natural Radioactivity of Rainfall" (April, 1954); 3) "Scintillation Tube for the Measurement of Radioactive Gases" (Dec. 1952). These articles were collectively authored by Paul E. Damon, Howard I. Hyde, and P.K. Kuroda.

DESCRIPTION: Included are general correspondence and memoranda. Among the correspondence are newsletters entitled "Mountain Dewings," written by Father Andrew Graves, S.J. to friends while at Church of the Little Flower in Revere, N.C. and Chapel of the Redeemer in Hot Springs, N.C., which provide material concerning parish events and local news. Also included are letters from Vincent S. Waters, Bishop of Raleigh, concerning a variety of topics, including a reference to the arisen problem of having personal funds of priests mixed with church or parish funds in parish designated bank accounts.

Begley, Bishop of Charlotte, which alludes to aims and changes within the Roman Catholic Church since the Second Vatican Council.

DESCRIPTION: Correspondence in this folder covers the years 1979-1984. Most of the items consists of letters with other Jesuits concerning provincial activities. One letter (Aug. 2, 1979) is in the form of a memo referring to an information up-date and request for help from the Salvadoran religious to the U.S. religious. Another letter-memo (July 26, 1979) provides information as to the state of affairs during the conflict in El Salvador and Nicaragua. Attached are two articles: one dealing with the expulsion of another priest from El Salvador and referring to the murder, expulsion and arrest of several other priests; the second being Juan Martinez's "Violence at Crisis Level in El Salvador."
