DESCRIPTION: 1 ALS from JDM to Dr. Emil Puhl, director of the Reichsbank (2 May 1939) and 1 TLS from Puhl to JDM (4 May 1939). The letter from JDM to Puhl is a request for a confidential meeting between Puhl and Joseph Kennedy, Amercian Ambassador to England. The letter from Puhl to JDM concerns Helmuth Wohlthat, a member of Goering's staff responsible for Germany's "Four Year Plan." This letter contains a separate sheet of information on Wohlthat and his business card.

Arrangements were finally made for Helmuth Wohlthat to meet with Kennedy. Since Kennedy could not get permission from the White House to attend the meeting in Paris, Wohlthat agreed to meet with him in London. (see folder for accounts of the meeting).

The contents in this folder and the next are from a special envelope designated by Mooney to be kept in a safe (see next folder).

DESCRIPTION: 6 typed and handwritten manuscripts of paraphrases of the five telegrams sent by JDM in Rome to Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington in March, 1940 concerning JDM's interview with Hitler earlier that month. Telegrams include: 1) 11 Mar 1940, a general summary of European reaction; 2) 12 Mar 1940, an outline of discussion with Hitler on March 4th; 3) 13 Mar 1940, notation that message #3 on Goering discussions re Finland is included verbatim in message #4; 4) 14 Mar 1940, an outline of discussion with Herman Goering on March 7th; 5) 15 Mar 1940, a memorandum containing "some suggestions dealing with this entire problem (of war and peace)." Reference to Joachim von Ribbentrop and Helmuth Wohlthat.

During their meeting, Hitler had his assistant write out Hitler's statements in German, then translate them into English and carefully edit them. Folder also includes two handwritten drafts of the statement and a carbon of JDM's letter to Hitler requesting the meeting (16 Feb 1940), a copy of which is also in Folder 8, Box 1.
