GEORGE MERRIAM HYDE PAPERS

SCOPE NOTE: The George Merriam Hyde Papers consist of a small number of letters written to George Merriam Hyde (1865-1899), literary critic and editorial writer, who spent some of his career in New York City. Correspondents include notables in the editorial business, such as William Crary Brownell, Edward Livermore Burlingame, Frank Moore Colby, James Gibbons Huneker, James Brander Matthews, Harry Thurston Peck, and Edmund Clarence Stedman. As the documents include references to various items for publication and numerous periodicals, this collection provides some insight into the world of American publishing at the close of the nineteenth century. Dating primarily between 1896 and 1898, this group of letters from the end of Hyde's life is sorted into seventeen folders and kept in one box comprising 0.25 linear feet.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Editorial writer and reviewer of books, George Merriam Hyde (1865-1899) was born in Middlesbury, Vermont, on February 26, 1865. His father, Professor James T. Hyde, taught at the Chicago Theological Seminary. After preliminary schooling in Chicago public schools, George M. Hyde received an A.M. from Amherst in 1888. He then pursued post-graduate and theological training at Yale University. From 1891 to 1892, he traveled in Europe. George M. Hyde began his career as an English literature teacher in Minneapolis High School from 1892 to 1896. On January 11, 1899, he married Violet McDougall Buel, daughter of Colonel D. H. Buel, U.S. Army. Hyde lived and worked in New York City until his death in 1899. He was an editorial writer for "The Commercial Advertiser." In addition, Hyde authored many essays in "Bookman," "Book Buyer," and newspapers. Nearly all of the letters in this collection were addressed to him in New York City, mostly by writers from there. The letters mention many periodicals, including "Book Buyer," "Bookman," "Critic," "Harper's Weekly," "Musical Courier," the "New York Times," and the "New York Tribune."
