THE PAUL SULLIVAN PAPERS

Paul S. Sullivan was a noted professor of English at Georgetown University from September 1941 until his death in February of 1961. Born on July 2, 1917, Paul Sullivan 's education included a Bachelors and a Masters degree from Boston College, along with a Masters degree from Harvard University. At Georgetown, Paul Sullivan was recognized as a conscientious, hard working individual, whose professional activities further complemented his teaching career. Indeed, Paul Sullivan's outstanding achievements are related to his distinguished role in educational radio and television, the College English Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and his work as Director of the Georgetown University Summer School.

The Paul Sullivan Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs and related printed ephemera, regarding Paul Sullivan's remarkable career. The papers are organized in six distinct groups, namely Correspondence, Subject File, Blue and Gray, High Latitudes, Personal, Manuscripts and Miscellaneous Series. The collection comprises 7.5 linear feet of material, and it is organized by series in five boxes with a total of two hundred and fifty four folders. While The Paul Sullivan Papers are mostly concerned with his years at Georgetown, they also include material dating from the late 1930's to 1961.

The Correspondence Series, like Paul Sullivan's original correspondence files, includes individual correspondence organized alphabetically, and Subject Correspondence arranged according to selected topics. The individual correspondence contains the bulk of Paul Sullivan's letters to and from friends and business associates. The letters are filed alphabetically, according to the individual's last name, with the exception of a few isolated cases. For instance, the letters concerning Paul Sullivan's studies at Harvard are all filed under H, rather than under the signers' last name. The above is also true for the letters concerning publishing houses, which are filed under the name of the publishing house, rather than under the names of the individual signers.

Paul Sullivan's individual correspondence includes letters of noted figures from Georgetown University, such as Father Edward B. Bunn, S.J., President of Georgetown from 1952 to 1964, Father Joseph H. Cohalan, S.J., Treasurer of Georgetown, Father Brian A. McGrath, S.J., Academic Vice-President, Father Joseph A. Sellinger, S.J., Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Roland H. Harmon, Chairman of the English Department. In addition, the individual correspondence includes touching World War II letters from several close friends.

The Subject Correspondence consists of letters related to the Blue and Gray Radio Show and the Naval Research Project.

Paul Sullivan was an active part of the production of the Blue and Gray Radio Show, which aired from the Fall of 1946 to May 26, 1951. In addition, he was involved with the production of Radio Forum since its origins in 1946. Both projects, intended as informative and educational public services, were coordinated by the campus radio station, WGTB, and the standard broadcast station WARL in Arlington, Virginia. The Blue and Gray subject correspondence includes letters to and from other radio stations as well as letters to distinguished participants of the Radio Forums. Included are copies of letters from Paul Sullivan, Program Director, to the Republican Floor Leader, Senator Charles A. Halleck, and to Senators Carrol Reece, John M. Vorys, Clement J. Zablocki, William G. Bray and Robert S. Kerr.

The Naval Research Project Subject Correspondence includes numerous letters and memos regarding a classified study of selected areas in the Northern Higher Latitudes. The study, dating from 1954 to 1956, aimed at identifying the most significant operational problems encountered in the areas and served also as a basis for strategic evaluation by the Technical Assistant. Because of the comprehensiveness of the subject under consideration, it was felt that persons trained in the humanities would be best prepared for undertaking the project. A small nucleus from the Georgetown English and Geography departments initiated the survey under the direction of Professor Paul Sullivan. In addition, the correspondence includes letters regarding an article that Paul Sullivan wrote as he participated in the Higher Latitudes Project, about Navy Chaplains at the pole.

The Subject File Series consists of Paul Sullivan's general file. The file contains miscellaneous material filed alphabetically, including papers and booklets about the Conference on College Composition and Communication from 1952 to 1961. Also, there is extensive material related to Paul Sullivan's English classes, dating from 1941 to 1961. The latter includes notes, syllabi, final examinations, roll books and compositions, organized chronologically according to the year that they were taught.

The Blue and Gray Series includes material regarding Paul Sullivan's involvement with radio broadcasting. Most of the material consists of scripts and radio plays for the Blue and Gray Show from December 1941 to May 1951, organized chronologically according to the dates of transmission. The Blue and Gray Show was a variety program that featured music, commentaries, radio plays and news, produced and organized by Georgetown students and faculty, through the campus station. The Blue and Gray Series also includes material regarding the Georgetown Radio Forum, WGTB program of traditional ballads, and a radio broadcasting course given by Paul Sullivan to members of WGTB

The Higher Latitudes Series consists of material related to the Naval Research Project described above, mostly dating from 1955 and 1956. It includes a preliminary proposal for the project, a general statement on the Higher Latitudes Research, a list of the research group, and a final report. In addition, there is information about methods of research, facilities, personnel, and estimated budget.

The Personal Series contains Paul Sullivan's private material. It includes applications for employment, certificates, data and phone books, and information regarding his education, work experience and death. Similarly, the Manuscripts Series consists of book reviews, articles, papers and books written by Paul Sullivan. Finally, the Miscellaneous Series comprises photographs and newspaper clippings found among Paul Sullivan's papers.

The Paul Sullivan Papers not only provide valuable biographical knowledge about this distinguished Georgetown University professor, but are also a wealth of information for the history of the many projects in which Paul Sullivan was involved. The collection is especially important for the history of the United States Naval projects in the higher latitudes, and even more so, for the history of Georgetown University. More specifically, the papers are a rich source for the study of the Summer School, English teaching and radio broadcasting at Georgetown.
