See below for our Fall 2014 workshop program!

If you register for one of our workshops, make sure that you arrive at the Gelardin New Media Center a few minutes early to ensure a prompt start time. If you need to cancel your registration, please email gelardin@georgetown.edu  48 hours before the workshop so that we can contact people on the waitlist. If you prefer to cancel your registration yourself, create an account with www.eventbrite.com using the same email address that you used to register for our workshop. We charge a $20 no-show fine to your library account for each workshop that you miss.

LinkedIn Makeover
9/15, 2:00-3:30pm, Room 156 (Dubin)

During this workshop participants will learn the best practices of creating a LinkedIn profile that will attract potential employers and expand one's professional network. Participants will also have a chance to get a professional headshot taken in a studio setting. The headshots will be shared digitally with participants 1-2 weeks after the workshop.

Retouching LinkedIn Photographs
9/17, 3:00-4:30pm, Picchi Lab

Participants will use the professional headshot taken from the LinkedIn Makeover workshop. They will be shown specific Photoshop tools that that will help them make choices about how to retouch their professional studio portrait. The tools and methods in Photoshop will be specific for retouching studio portraits, especially in dealing with different shadows, outfits, facial blemishes, and skin tones.

Intro to InDesign
9/22, 2:00-4:00pm Picchi Lab

Participants will be introduced to desktop publishing and the InDesign interface, and will learn how to import and format text, create frames, place text and images into frames, manipulate and organize objects in layers, manipulate text and images into basic layouts, and export projects as PDF files. Having completed the workshop, participants should be able to create basic documents such as brochures, pamphlets, and posters and prepare them for printing.

Intro to Photoshop
9/23, 2:00-4:00pm, Picchi Lab

Participants will be introduced to the Photoshop workspace as well as basic Photoshop concepts including layers, managing text and making selections. Participants will also be exposed to the common types of image file formats and how they are used in web and print environments.

Planning for Video Production
9/24, 10:30-12:00pm, Room 158 (CoLab)

This workshop will walk participants through the most important phase of video production, which is "pre-production" (the planning phase). Different types of shotlists, scripts, and video clips will be shown during this time to give you a feel of how planning is actually applied to a completed video project. The instructor will also demo and explain best practices for a basic video production equipment set-up.

Social Media Marketing
9/25, 2:00-4:00pm, Picchi Lab

This workshop will cover some of the concepts, platforms, and tools in the Social Media landscape. Participants will discuss social media engagement, how to set and implement specific goals & strategies, and get hands-on experience developing a professional social media presence.

Prerequisite: No prerequisite, but it is recommended that participants have a basic knowledge of different social media platforms and their corresponding functions

Intro to Photography
9/29, 2:00-4:00, Picchi Lab

Participants will learn the basics of photography techniques and composition using a digital camera. Participants will learn about various settings, including shutter speed, ISO, and aperture, and how they affect depth of field and exposure. Participants are encouraged to bring their own DSLR cameras.

Video Editing with iMovie
9/30, 2:00-4:00pm, Picchi Lab

This workshop will introduce participants to the techniques and concepts of video editing. Participants will learn how to import video, edit scenes, add effects, transitions, and export a final movie using iMovie.

Intermediate InDesign
10/2, 2:00-4:00pm, Picchi Lab

Participant will expand on their knowledge from the Introduction to InDesign course by learning advanced text formatting, advanced layouts including master pages, creating gradients, adding effects, advanced image placement with Photoshop, package and export projects as PDF files. Having completed the beginner and advanced workshops, participants should be able to create basic documents such as brochures, pamphlets, and posters and prepare them for printing.

Intermediate Photoshop
10/6, 2:00-4:00pm, Picchi Lab

This workshop provides participants with techniques for retouching photographs. It will also build on the intro course, going into more depth about layers and filters and creating images and profiles for various outputs.

Field Photography
10/7, 10:00am-12:00pm, Production Studio

This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn photography techniques in the field with DSLR cameras. The instructor will cover how to take advantage of the many functions and features of a DSLR camera. The instructor will take the group out to locations around Georgetown to practice shooting and to provide coaching. If you own a DSLR camera, we highly recommend that you bring it with you for this workshop.

Hands-on Video Production Techniques
10/7, 2:00-3:30pm, Production Studio

This hands-on workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to learn how to set up a professional, yet basic production shoot. This includes learning how to capture quality audio and video footage using both DSLR and HD video cameras, as well as touching on the fundamentals of cinematography and lighting techniques.

Infographics with Illustrator
10/8, 10:00am-12:00pm, Picchi Lab

This workshop will cover how to create basic infographics with Adobe Illustrator. We will cover the basics of using the chart tool, selecting colors, finding fonts, and incorporating icons.

Camera Raw with Photoshop
10/14, 2:00-3:30pm, Picchi Lab

Participants will explore working with raw-format photos in Photoshop’s Camera Raw Editor to improve contrast, color, and tone, to create a better overall image.

Prerequisite: None, but basic knowledge of Photoshop is recommended

Studio Photography

This workshop will give participants an overview of studio lighting for portraiture and still life. It will cover using hot lights, strobes, softboxes, umbrellas, reflectors, light meters, and more.

There will be some hands-on time during the end of this workshop to apply the newly acquired principles and techniques to a project in Adobe Illustrator.

Video Editing with Final Cut X

This workshop will provide an overview of Apple's professional video editing platform Final Cut Pro X. Participants will learn how to ingest footage, make basic cuts, add titles, add secondary audio, and export a final movie to a sharable file format. Participants should have some basic experience with video editing before registering for this workshop (for example, iMovie).

Retouching with Photoshop
11/11, 10:30am-12:00pm, Picchi Lab

This course will go more in depth with color correction and other image adjustments. Processes to retouch images using the clone stamp, the healing brush tool, the eyedropper tool, and the spot healing brush tool will be covered. Also, the instructor will demonstrate how to use layers effectively in the retouching process with surprising results.

Interactive PDFs with InDesign

This course covers the process of creating an interactive PDF using InDesign. This course will cover how to make hyperlinks to websites, other pages in your documents, and email; add buttons that navigate, show, and hide content; create a form with check boxes and text entry fields; and embed audio and video; and look at PDF exporting options.
