II. Finding Books

A. Lauinger Library - Search GEORGE, the online catalog, by:

Subject: Use the Library ofo Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), the red volumes shelved in the dictionary stand near the Reference Desk to find the correct terms. Examples of subject headings:

Japan - Economic conditions
India - Foreign relations
Upanishads
Asia, Central
Asia, Southeast
Asian Development Bank
Mao Tse Tung

Keyword: When you can't determine a relevant Library of Congress Subject Heading or when you want to combine terms, search by "keyword." This technique locates words in a book's title, subject headings, and other fields within the record. For example to find books on the influence of Japanese art on Impressionism, you might try:

impressionis* and (japan or japanese)

Such a search will locate records that include the words "impressionism" or "impressionists" (i.e., any word beginning with "impressionis") as well as either "Japan" or "Japanese" (or both).
