Guide to Research: European History

This guide describes some of the basic resources for research in European history, but does not intend to be comprehensive. Most sources listed here have been selected because they provide coverage of entire regions or the continent and include primarily English language publications.

Medieval European history is included in the "Medieval Studies" guide. Use the "West European Area Studies" or the "Russian and East European Area Studies" guides for very current topics. The resources listed below are located in the Lauinger Library reference area, except as noted. This guide can be found onine at http://www.library.georgetown.edu/guides/eurohistory/

II. Finding Books

To locate books in Lauinger Library, use GEORGE, the online catalog.

A. Subject Searching: Search for citations to books on European history by using Library of Congress Subject Headings. [Used in most American library catalogs, Library of Congress Subject Headings are terms that have been established to represent subjects.] Some of the relevant Library of Congress Subject Headings include:

  • To find general information

                e.g.  Denmark - History

  • To find a particular time period

                e.g.  Great Britain - History - 1066-1687
Great Britain - History - Wars of the Roses - 1455-1485
                        Great Britain - History - Edward IV - 1461-1483

Note: Time periods can be indicated by a named period or by the name of a ruler or by dates. Time periods indicated by name plus date, e.g. Great Britain - History - Wars of the Roses - 1455-1485 will not appear in GEORGE in chronological order with time periods indicated by a date only, e.g. Great Britain - History - 1066-1687.

  • To find an event

                e.g.  Congress of Vienna

also search for chronological period or a topical subdivision

                e.g.  France - History - Restoration - 1814-1830
France - Foreign Relations - Germany

  • To find an individual

                e.g.  Churchill, Winston, 1874-1965
Great Britain - Politics and Government - 1936-1945
                        Great Britain - History - George VI - 1936-1952

  • To find primary sources

                e.g.  Spain - History - Sources
                        Spain - History - Civil War - 1936-1939 - Sources

B. Keyword Searching: When you can't determine a relevant Library of Congress Subject Heading (or when you want to combine headings), search by "keyword." This technique locates words in a book's title, subject headings, and in other fields within the record. For example: revolution* and 1848 and (germany or italy).

III. Bibliographies

The subheading - Bibliography can be used with any subject heading in GEORGE. For example, World War, 1939-1945 - Bibliography; Poland - History - Bibliography; Germany - History -1939-1945 - Bibliography.
