Printing from Selected Databases

DOS Programs | EIU | GEORGE | HarpWeek | IFS | International Medieval Bibliography | JSTOR

DOS Programs

We only have a few DOS-based databases left; as of January 2000, Philosopher's Index and Compact D/SEC pre-1999.

The most important thing to remember about printing from DOS programs is that once you have sent your job from the Uniprint station to the printer, you must press the SELECT button on the printer to print the first page of a one-page job, and press SELECT to print the last page of a multi-page job.

Occasionally, we will lose the ability to print from all DOS programs. If you can not print at all, try to print from another of our DOS programs. If this database will also not print, call Systems and let them know about the problem.

EIU Printing

  1. After selecting the type of publication and country you are presented with 2 file types to choose from.
  2. It is generally better to choose the PDF version for two reasons:

If you have to print from the HTML, choose to print, go into Options, and change the orientation from portrait to landscape.

Note about printing PDF documents from EIU: Because many EIU documents are long pdf files, printing can often take a while.  Remind patrons to be patient.  It is not uncommon for a job to take up to 5 minutes to be sent to the Uniprint station.  It can also take a long time for the job to print out from the Uniprint station.

GEORGE

It is not obvious how to print out a full citation from GEORGE. To print out the full record of a single item, simply go perform a search and click on the link to the full record. The problem comes if you want to print an extended record for more than one item on one page. To do this:

  1. Mark the records you want to print by checking off the box to the left of each title.
  2. At the bottom of every page that you have marked records, click on the Save Marked Records button.
  3. When done, click on View/Email/Save Marked Records.
  4. On the next page you will see an option to send the list to Email, Screen, or Local Disk. To print the records out, select Screen and then click on the Submit button.
  5. This will redisplay your previously marked records onto one page. From here print as you normally would.

HarpWeek Printing

  1. There will be a link about the document you want to print which says Click here to print this page.
  2. This will open a dialog box which asks you to choose to open or save the document.
  3. Choose to Open the document.
  4. This will open the HarpWeek print solution.

The 3 Printing Options

  1. The first option is to print the current view of the page. This will only print the portion of the document that you see on the screen onto one sheet of paper.
  2. The second option is to print the entire page of the newspaper on one 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper. This is very small and difficult to read.
  3. Best option usually - The third option will print the entire page of the newspaper on as many sheets of paper as necessary. Usually this will print onto 2, 8 ½ x 11 sheets of paper. We do not offer 11 x 17 paper, do not choose this option.

International Financial Statistics

Sometimes patrons have long tables that are best printed on legal paper.

Once you have the table ready to be printed it is a two-step process to make sure the page will print with a landscape orientation, then that the page will print on legal paper.

The printers should all have legal paper (8 ½ x14) in tray 3.

International Medieval Bibliography

  1. After performing your search, select (mark) the citations you want to print.
  2. Click on the Print button.
  3. Choose the print Selected Records and More Records Per Page (this will insure that each citation does not print on its own page).
  4. Make sure to UNCHECK Include Query. For some reason this will print your search query and not print your results.

JSTOR Printing

  1. Pull up the article you wish to print.
  2. Do not use Netscape print options to print the article, this will only print the first page of the article.
  3. To print the entire article, choose the Print button on the left side of the screen.
JSTOR offers 3 printing options.
  1. Choose to print using Option 2 - Adobe Acrobat Printing.
  2. Economy printing is fine.  The quality of the Economy Print is very good.
  3. Your page will open in a new window.
  4. At this point you can use any print option (Netscape or Acrobat) to print the article.

Note: Because many JSTOR articles are long pdf files, printing can often take a while.  Remind patrons to be patient.  It is not uncommon for a job to take up to 5 minutes to be sent to the Uniprint station.  It can also take a long time for the job to print out from the Uniprint station.

Uniprint Troubleshooting

Crashes

There is a common problem with the Uniprint system that causes the screen to freeze and the printer not to print the user's document. This usually occurs when a user has attempted to send multiple print jobs in immediate succession. Follow these steps to print the document and restart Uniprint:

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the Uniprint station. This brings up a close program dialogue box.
  2. Click on "UnipriNT Print Station" and select End Task. After a few seconds the print job should begin printing.
  3. Now open the Start menu and choose Programs > UnipriNT > UnipriNT Print Station to restart the program. The print job list will automatically reappear and you can click Exit to eject the card from the reader.

This is a recurring scenario. If this does not work and you cannot get the system to respond, then restart the Uniprint computer.

Cancelling a Print Job

Sometimes you may notice the printer printing out a large number of blank sheets or pages with gibberish. In this case it is sometimes better to cancel the print job rather than just turn the printer off. To cancel a print job you must use the control panel on the printer itself. On the control panel:

1

Press [Menus] until "JOB CONTROL MENU" appears.

2

Press [Items] until "CANCEL JOB" appears.

3
Press [Select *]. "STOPPING CHECK LAST PAGE" appears until the last page currently being printed is placed in the output bin.
4 "PRESS SELECT TO CANCEL JOB" is displayed. If you press [Select *] again, "CANCELING JOB" appears until the entire print job is removed or deleted.

Formfeeding the printer

Sometimes the printer will stop responding and the Data light will remain lit. If this is the case, it usually means that data from a previous print job is still in the printer's buffer. To clear the buffer:

1

Press [Menus] until "JOB CONTROL MENU" appears.

2

Press [Items] until "PRESS SELECT TO FORMFEED" appears.

3
Press [Select *].

Caps Lock

If a problem arises with password entry, the first thing to check is the caps lock key. If it is enabled then it will cause the passwords to be entered incorrectly. Since Uniprint uses a case sensitive system, the password must be retyped exactly as it was keyed in at the workstation. If the problem persists, resend the job from the workstation with a new password.

Paper Jams

When there is a paper jam in the printers it is important to check all the trays and doors to make sure there are no lingering pieces that might hamper the next print job. Whenever a sheet of jammed paper becomes badly shredded it is sometimes a good idea to piece all parts together to be sure you haven't overlooked some small part.

To clear the printer, follow these directions::

Top Output Bin
If the paper jam extends into the output area, slowly and carefully pull the paper straight out of the printer so it doesn't tear.

Tray 1
1

Open the door of Tray 1.

2

Check for paper in the roller.

3
Remove any paper by pulling in the direction show by the arrow.
4 Close the door.

Left Door (Fuser Area)
1

Open left door. Avoid touching fusing area, marked by yellow warning sticker.

2

Remove any paper by pulling in the direction show by the arrow.

3 Close the door.

In addition, check each of the paper trays to make sure the paper is stacked properly for the next print job. Remove any torn or creased paper.
