Laptop Wireless Printing in the Library

General information

Wireless printing is available from Windows and Mac OS laptops to all Print Release Stations in Lauinger Library. The service requires downloading and installing free printing software, which will install the printers on your computer. Due to the wide variety of settings and configurations on personal laptops, the Library cannot guarantee that wireless printing will work on all system configurations.

Library staff reserve the right to cancel problematic print jobs.

How to use this service

Step 1: Connect to the SaxaNet wireless network; laptop printing is not available through the GuestNet network. You can also be connected to a campus wired ethernet jack.

Step 2: Uninstall any previous library printing software

Step 3: Install the Print Software

Step 4: Send your print job to the print queue

Step 5: Release your print job

Printing cost

Single-sided pages are $.10 each, double-sided pages are $.05. Color prints, available through the Gelardin Color printer, are $.65 per page. Printing double-sided is not the default on the laptop print drivers. Please verify that your job was submitted properly by checking the page count and cost at the Print Release Station before printing and being charged. A GOCard or Copy Card with sufficient funds is required to print.

A University Net ID is required. At this time, the software needed for wireless printing is available only to current Georgetown University students, faculty and staff.

System Requirements:

  • Windows 8 (except RT), Windows 7, Vista, or XP
Mac OS 10.5.2 or later, or 10.6 or later
  • A network connection to the campus network
  • Administrative rights on your computer to install software

I followed your installation instructions and tried everything in your FAQs and I still can't get things to work. What steps can I try to fix it?

  • Verify that you're connected to SaxaNet wireless network: printing will not function over GuestNet.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • Remove the print software and then reinstall.

If you continue to experience problems, fill out the Laptop Printing Problem Form and a library staff person will contact you within two business days. If copies are needed immediately, Georgetown Faculty, Staff and Students with a valid NetID may print from any computer in the Lauinger Library. Patrons without a NetID will need to use one of the Public Access computers near the Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor of Lauinger Library.

When I send a print job from my laptop, how do I know which print station it goes to?

The print software will install two printers on your computer, allowing you to send print jobs to either the black and white printers in Lauinger Library or to the color printer located in Gelardin New Media Center. Jobs sent to the Lauinger Library printer will be available at all print release stations in those libraries, except for the Gelardin color station.

Must I be in the Library to use this service?

No, you do not need to be in a main campus library. You do need to be connected to the Georgetown University SaxaNet wireless or wired ethernet network; laptop printing will not work if you are connected to GuestNet.

How long will my print job remain in the queue before being purged?

Jobs will remain in the queue for two hours. When a job is printed, it is removed from the print queue.

Is color printing available?

Yes, prints sent to the Gelardin Color printer will be sent to the Gelardin Color Print Station in the Gelardin New Media Center. You may find it useful to first send your job to a lower priced monochrome printer to verify that your document's formatting is correct before sending it to the more expensive color printer.

Which paper sizes are available for printing?

8 ½ by 11 inches is the only paper size available.

Can printing be done with cash?

No, the print stations do not accept cash. All Lauinger Library print stations require a University GOCard or Copy Card for printing.

How do I add money to my GOCard?

If you experience problems with the Deposit Stations, please contact the GOCard office at (202) 687-2700 or visit the GOCard office in Darnall Hall.

Whom do I contact if my print job didn’t go through; the printer is jammed; or I received poor, illegible copies?

  • Go to the nearest service desk; the Gelardin New Media Center on the first floor or the Circulation Desk on the third floor at Lauinger Library
  • Call Lauinger Circulation (202-687-7607)
  • Send an email to accessservices@georgetown.edu
  • Use the Library’s Ask Us service to IM your problem.

How do I remove the Printing Software?

Follow the instructions for uninstalling based on your computer's operating system.

The printer jammed or displayed an error during my print job but I was still charged. How can I receive a refund?

The nearest service desk will be able to offer a refund in the case of a printer malfunction. Please note that refunds will not be given for problems outside of printer malfunction, such as a malformed job being sent to the printer or the wrong formatting being used.

I'd like to print to the library printers from my desktop, is this possible?

Yes, if your desktop is on campus and connected to the campus network, the laptop print drivers will work for your desktop as well.

For general questions about the Library and/or your research, go to Ask Us on the Library’s website.

  • If you are printing a PDF from within a web browser, use the print function in Adobe Reader, not the browser’s print function.
  • Always use the “Print Preview” feature to determine the exact pages you want to print to avoid paying for extra pages.
  • If you experience errors when clicking on your job on a Print Release Station, such as the message "counting pages" showing indefinitely, resubmit your print job as multiple, smaller batches. For instance if your 20 page document is having problems, try breaking it into two 10-page jobs.
  • All print jobs that you have not yet printed will remain in the print queue for two hours. After two hours, print jobs expire and are deleted from the queue.
  • If a print job jams, contact the nearest Service Desk. In Lauinger Library, the service desks are located on the first floor in Gelardin New Media Center and the third floor at the Circulation Desk.
  • For higher quality reproduction of graphics and images in pdf files, use the Adobe option “Print as image.”  (See Adobe printing tips for directions.)
