Welcome to our New English and Humanities Librarian
The Library welcomes our new English and Humanities Librarian, Melissa S. Van Vuuren, who arrives at Georgetown on March 18. Melissa comes to the Georgetown University Library from James Madison University, where she has been the English Librarian and a tenured Associate Professor. In addition to serving as the library’s liaison to the English department, she is both the liaison to the Foreign Language, Literatures, & Cultures department and the former liaison to the Writing & Rhetoric Studies Program. For the past seven years, she has provided collection development, instruction, and reference services to the faculty and students in her liaison areas. She also works as part of a dynamic public services team that has revitalized reference services at the James Madison University Libraries.
Melissa is the author of Literary Research and the Victorian and Edwardian Ages, 1830-1910: Strategies and Sources (Scarecrow Press, 2011) and co-author of Literary Research and Postcolonial Literatures in English: Strategies and Sources (Scarecrow Press, 2012). In the summer of 2012, she was admitted to the prestigious Rare Book School at the University of Virginia for courses on Scholarly Editing: Principles and Practices and The Printed Book in the West since 1800. Additionally, she co-presented on textual analysis tools at Digital Humanities: Theory and Practice, an ACRL Preconference at the ALA Annual Conference in 2012. She is an active member of ACRL’s Literatures in English Section and has been entrusted with the position of Chair of that section.
A South Dakota native, Melissa is a graduate of Indiana University (MLS, 2005), the University of Nevada, Reno (MA, 2004), and the University of South Dakota (BS, 2002). She is a member of both the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
