[From the 1st issue's introduction]

We have a crisis of perspective in our public discourse. Perhaps, as
some paid pundits and fatuous futurists insist, we are moving from a
representational to a participatory democracy in America. But this much
is clear: dandy tools such as the Internet are tearing down the old
media relationships and opening new avenues for the ordinary citizen.

"These are the times that try men's souls," Thomas Paine averred just
before our ancestors told King George III to take a hike. Revolutionary
times today too, some say, and we agree.

Old Tom Jefferson [you know, the guy that looked like Nick Nolte]
thought that it's a good idea every so often to start a revolution.
With that in mind, Nick & Gene are starting PAINE NEWS -- a monthly
electronic journal of ideas and commentary on American life and
institutions. We call it PAINE NEWS to honor the revolutionary spirit
of Tom Paine and which spirit we feel is sorely needed today.

We aim to spark public debate on issues submerged by the clutter and
hidden restraints of our culture. So it was with Tom Paine --
corsetmaker, tax collector and passionate spokesman for democracy. So
it is today for us and our heirs yet unborn.
