The Future of First Books

The Library’s annual fall Scholarly Communication Symposium, The Future of First Books: Open Access Monograph Publishing in the Humanities and Social Sciences will be held on Friday, October 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. The Symposium will address the pressing questions facing many new faculty and universities today as sales of monographs decline, reducing opportunities for scholars to publish, a vital component of earning tenure. How will new faculty members now receive the credentialing they need to earn tenure and move forward with their careers?

One response to this question that several organizations are exploring is open access (OA) digital books. But are these initiatives sustainable? How will promotion and tenure committees view these books? How successful will these books be? How will libraries respond?

The Symposium panelists will address these questions and more. The panel will be moderated by Richard Brown, Director of the Georgetown University Press, and will include Brett Bobley, CIO of the National Endowment for the Humanities and director of the NEH’s Office of Digital Humanities; Shana Kimball, business development manager of the New York Public Library and former librarian at the University of Michigan; and Greg Britton, editorial director of Johns Hopkins University Press.

All are welcome to attend the symposium; please RSVP by September 29.

The Scholarly Communication Symposium is presented annually by the Scholarly Communication Committee. Learn more about scholarly communication at Georgetown on the Library’s website.
