Avoiding plagiarism

The Georgetown University Honor System defines plagiarism as "the act of passing off as one's own the ideas or writings of another."

If you are found in violation of the Honor System, you will receive a sanction such as a notation on your transcript or suspension from school.

Because the consequences of plagiarism are so severe, you need to learn more about what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. Copying someone else's paper or lifting passages from a book without giving credit to the author are blatant examples. But you could also be in violation through carelessness, such as forgetting quotation marks or omitting a footnote.
