Using Write-N-Cite to Add Citations to Papers

RefWorks helps you to insert citations directly into your paper. In order to use this feature you must first download a small and free program Write-N-Cite.

Installing Write-N-Cite

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open RefWorks
  2. From Tools menu select Write-N-Cite
  3. Follow installation instructions and launch the program
  4. Write-N-Cite can now be used within MS Word

Adding Citations to Papers

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open MS Word document and start writing your paper
  2. Put the cursor where the reference citation should be inserted in your text and click on Write-N-Cite button (now it should be installed in your MS Word)
  3. Enter your RefWorks username and password, then click Login
  4. Click on View to open your Folder. The list of your references will open
  5. To add a citation to your paper just click Cite link next to the specific reference in RefWorks screen
  6. Do not alter the brackets or the text between the brackets
  7. Save the document
  8. To format the finial paper by adding parenthetical references and the bibliography, click on Bibliography button in RefWorks screen and select Output Style
  9. Click on Create Bibliography
  10. A new window will open with the reformatted MS Word document, containing your paper, citations, and new bibliography
  11. Save your document, with new name.
