Carrels:

A limited number of library study carrels are available to faculty and graduate students. Preference is given to doctoral students currently working on their thesis when assigning graduate carrels. A refundable $40.00 key deposit is required.

Carrels are also available for short term use and for students with disabilities.


Group Discussion Rooms:

  • Lauinger Library has four group study rooms available for use by Georgetown faculty and students. Study rooms comfortably accommodate 6-7 patrons.
  • To inquire about a group discussion room present your current Georgetown University ID card at the Circulation / Reserve Desk on the third floor of Lauinger Library or call 202 687-7607.
  • Same day reservations are not accepted. Rooms that are not reserved are available on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Reservations cannot be made more than one week in advance.
  • Reservations can be made for a maximum of three hours per patron per day.


Individual Study Carrels:

  • Lauinger Library has ten individual study carrels available for use by Georgetown faculty and students on an hourly basis.
  • To inquire about an individual study carrel present your current Georgetown University ID card at the Circulation / Reserve Desk on the third floor of Lauinger Library or call 202 687-7607.
  • Same day reservations are not accepted. Rooms that are not reserved are available on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Reservations cannot be made more than one week in advance.
  • Reservations can be made for a maximum of three hours per patron per day.


Late Night Study:

In addition to the Pierce Reading Room, several other areas of the Library are open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. The only time that the entire library is closed is from 3 am until 8 am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. You can refer to library hours for more details.

Which areas of the Library are open 24 hours a day?

  • Lauinger Library's Pierce Reading Room on the 3rd floor.
  • The main room of the Gelardin New Media Center and the stacks on the 1st floor.
  • The entire 2nd floor (including the computer area).
  • The entire 4th floor.
  • The stacks on the 5th floor.
  • The stacks on the lower level.

Only those with a Georgetown University ID will be admitted between 11:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.


Lockers:

The Lauinger Library has 176 small lockers available to members of the Georgetown University community. A $30.00 refundable deposit is required.


Lounges:

There are two study lounges in Lauinger, located on the 1st and 4th floors. The 1st floor lounge has been designated a Graduate Lounge. The 4th floor lounge is open to all. If group discussion rooms are not available, there are tables in the lounges where discussions can take place. There is no smoking in the lounges.

The Midnight Mug is located on the 2nd floor. During operating hours, there are chairs and tables available for studying, eating, and drinking. The Midnight Mug is the only place in the library where food is allowed.


Pierce Reading Room:

The Pierce Reading Room, on the 3rd floor of Lauinger Libary, is a quiet study area open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. During semesters, the only time the room is closed is from 3 am until 8 am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Please refer to library hours for specific times Pierce is open between semesters.

The Pierce Reading Room also houses the Joseph Durkin Collection which specializes in American Studies.


Quiet Study Areas:

Space has been set aside for quiet study on every floor of Lauinger. In these areas there is no talking, no laptop use, and no playing of cd-players or cassette-players (even with headphones). These areas are clearly designated by signs. You can refer to the library maps for specific locations.


Services for Patrons with Disabilities:

Carrels:
Lauinger has eight carrels set aside for students with physical disabilities, and/or learning disabilities. Please contact Jeffrey Popovich at popovijm@georgetown.edu or by phone (202) 687-7403 for more information.

Equipment:
For students with visual impairments, please contact Jane Holahan in the Office of Learning and Disability Support Services at holahajf@georgetown.edu or by phone (202) 687-6985 to discuss arrangements for the use of equipment.
