Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan locates and borrows material not owned by the Georgetown University Main Campus or the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) libraries.

Before using ILL, check 1) GEORGE then 2) the WRLC catalog for the material (if found in the WRLC catalog, use the Consortium Loan Service (CLS) to request books and journal articles). If the item is listed in the Georgetown catalog, but has a status of "missing," "searching," or "missing SENSA," then an ILL request can be made.

Who is eligible to use Interlibrary Loan?

ILL is available to the students, faculty, and staff of the Main Campus at Georgetown University who have a current University GOCard.

Only Georgetown University Main Campus faculty, staff and students may use the Interlibrary Loan service. School of Medicine and Law Center patrons are referred to the School of Medicine's Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Services and the E.B. Williams Law Library's Interlibrary Loan office, respectively.

Georgetown University ILL is not available to members of the Library Associates, and other fee-paying borrowers. Fee-paying borrowers may obtain this service through their local public, school, or academic library.

Students and faculty from other academic universities must use the Interlibrary Loan services of their home institutions.

What materials can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan?

ILL is a library-to-library transaction and is regulated by the Copyright Law (U.S. Code, title 17) and the policies of the American Library Association Interlibrary Loan Code. ILL provides access to most books, journal articles, microforms, conference proceedings, and other course-related research materials not owned by the Georgetown University Main Campus or WRLC ibraries.

ILL cannot be used for materials available in GEORGE or the WRLC Catalog. Materials in GEORGE that are checked out or have a status of "missing," "searching," or "missing SENSA" must first be requested through the WRLC Catalog using CLS.

The following are generally not available through ILL:
- entire issues of bound or unbound journals
- reference books or special collections materials.

What does Interlibrary Loan cost?

Most ILL requests are filled free of charge due to the establishment of reciprocal agreements with other libraries. In the rare event that a loan costs more than $30.00, ILL staff may contact you before completing the request in order to determine if you wish to make the necessary co-payment.

How do I submit an Interlibrary Loan request?

Before you complete an ILL request form, confirm that the material is not available by checking GEORGE, the online catalog of Georgetown University and the WRLC catalog, the online catalog of the Washington Research Libraries Consortium. If the material is not available in either catalog, complete an ILL request form for each item you need. ILL request forms are only available electronically.

To request an item from ILL select one of the following:

First Time Users: please set up your ILLiad profile.

Registered Users: request items, check the status of requests, or revise your ILLiad profile.

How long does it take to fill an Interlibrary Loan request?

On average it takes 11 working days to fill an ILL request, though it can take as little as 3 days or as long as 1 month to receive materials, depending on the location and the availability of the item at other libraries.

The ILL office cannot predict the availability or location of an item, therefore we cannot guarantee that materials will be received within a specified period of time. Patrons are encouraged to submit requests well in advance of deadlines.

How will Interlibrary Loan notify me?

On the ILL request form all patrons are asked if they would prefer to be notified by e-mail or telephone when an item is received.

How do I get the materials?

Books and copies of dissertations may be picked up at the ILL Office located behind the Reference Desk in the Lauinger Library during business hours or at the Circulation Desk at other times. (map)

Journal articles are delivered electronically to your desktop via the web in pdf format.

  • If you prefer to have paper copies of articles delivered, please go into your ILLiad account and change the preferred electronic delivery if possible field to "No." Paper copies will be available for pick up at the ILL office.

When are materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan due?

There is no standard loan period for ILL items as the library that lends the material specifies the date. Typically items may be kept for three weeks. The due date for materials will be noted on the item. The lending library also specifies whether the item must be used in the library (in the case of rare or delicate materials) or if they may be photocopied. Patrons are responsible for the safe and on-time return of items borrowed through ILL.

Overdue ILL fines

Late fees of $0.25 per day are assessed to each overdue ILL item until materials are returned. Payment for fines can be made in person at the Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor of Lauinger Library.

In addition to fines, failure to return items obtained through ILL in a prompt manner may result in the loss of both your your ILL and Georgetown Library borrowing privileges.

Can I renew Interlibrary Loan materials?

Unless noted on the item, ILL staff can request a renewal of an ILL item. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library, not the Georgetown ILL office. The request for a renewal must be made in advance of the original due date; if an ILL item is overdue, renewal is not possible.

To request the renewal of an item obtained through ILL, stop by the office, call 202-687-7428, or send an e-mail to ill@georgetown.edu. You may also request through the “View/Renew Checked Out Items” option in your ILLiad account.

The new due date you are given at the time of your renewal request is the date by which you should check back with the ILL office about the lending library’s response. It is the patron’s responsibility to follow-up with the ILL office about renewal requests.

What if I lose or damage material obtained through Interlibrary Loan?

The patron borrowing the item is responsible for its safe return. In the event that an item is lost or damaged you, the borrower, are responsible for its replacement costs. Should you lose or damage an ILL item contact ILL staff at 202-687-7428 or ill@georgetown.edu.
