Mothers and Mothering: A View from Time and Place

Mothers and Mothering: A View from Time and Place

It’s May and spring has arrived on campus, which means most folks are thinking about finals and graduation. But May also means Mother’s Day! In honor of this, the Recommended Reading Bookshelf is full of books and movies about Mothers & Motherhood. This is by no means an exhaustive collection on the topic, but we hope that the display will inspire you to read (or watch) something in honor of mothers around the world.

The Motherhood-themed display includes a wide variety of genres…

If you like good fiction, pick up The Almost Sisters, The Book that Matters Most, The Caregiver, Lucky Boy, or Love and Friendship.

There are some thoughtful books that discuss the often complicated relationship between mothers and their children including The Women Who Raised Me, Riding Shotgun, Our Black Sons Matter, and Between Mothers & Daughters.

If you are interested in the evolution of motherhood and cultural or historical differences, we recommend Maternity: Mothers and Children in the Arts of Africa, Modern Motherhood: An American History, Feminism, and Motherhood in Western Europe, 1890-1970, and Unstable Bodies: Victorian Representations of Sexuality and Maternity.

Finally, there are some engaging biographies including First Mothers: The Women Who Shaped Presidents, Mother Jones: The Most Dangerous Women in America, and Philomena, as well as a selection of classic movies about mothers, both good and bad.

Stop by, browse, and check out any of these books on display. If you want to browse virtually, visit the Mothers & Mothering site. Don’t forget to let us know what you think by sending us your feedback. We want to hear from you!
